Today we’re taking a look at a prayer recited by Adam in the LDS temple ceremony. To read the transcript in full click here.
We’re listing part of the prayer first and then we’ll compare it with what the Bible says so here we go –
THE LONE AND DREARY WORLD: THE TELESTIAL KINGDOM, ADAM PRAYS
[Adam and Eve are shown full view for the first time and they’re wearing animal skins. The lone and dreary world is represented by desert scenery. Adam kneels at his stone altar, spreads his hands to heaven, and prays.]
ADAM: Brethren and sisters, this represents the Telestial kingdom, or the world in which we now live.
Adam, on finding himself in the lone and dreary world, built an altar and offered prayer, and these are the words he uttered:
[Adam kneels at the altar and lifts his hands towards heaven, each arm raised to the square.]
Oh God, hear the words of my mouth.
Oh God, hear the words of my mouth.
Oh God, hear the words of my mouth.
[Lucifer comes into view.]
LUCIFER: I hear you. What is it you want?
ADAM: Who are you?
LUCIFER: I am the god of this world.
Clearly, this scenario is anything but a biblical pattern of prayer. How do we know this? Simply put; the Bible. Let’s see what God has to say about prayers.
Matthew 6:7-13 – ‘But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do…’
Jesus’ instruction defies what Mormons subject themselves to in the cultic practice seen in LDS temple ceremonies. Throughout the Bible from the beginning to end, there are nearly 1,100 references to prayer. BTW – Truth According to Scripture has a page listing every prayer in the Bible that’s worthy of checking out!
Questions –
If Satan answered Adam’s prayer, does this mean he can answer our prayers?
Why did Satan answer Adam’s prayer if he was praying in the ‘true order of prayer’?
Where in the Bible does it mention a ‘true order of prayer’ we must engage in while praying?
Why must Mormons know this ‘true order of prayer’ if it’s not practiced outside of the temple?
If Adam raised his hands during prayer, why do Mormons fold their arms and bow their heads during prayer?

Thank you! I really enjoy your articles. Sometimes it gets pretty frustrating when no one seems to care about what happened in the early days of Mormonism and how it is still impacting thousands of people today in a bad way. Thousands of children have been abused by this system. Thousands of women have lived lives of slavery because of Joseph Smith’s teachings and the apathy of the mainstream church. Our Mormon families won’t even look at the evidence. The LDS church is culpable whether they think so or not.
You took the words right out of my mouth! The apathy of members in the Church should leave everyone speechless. I’m of the opinion it stems from a complete and utter numbness of their spiritual and emotional lives. People don’t seem to understand that demonic influences permeates every aspect of a person’s well being. Whether it’s spiritual, emotional, mental or whatever. And those influences are passed on down from one generation to another whether people like to admit it or not.
Because of the way God has hardwired us for all things to operate in tandem, it should never be taken for granted the smallest of things play no part. Prayers like the one in this example have a huge impact in dumbing down, or numbing down a person’s wherewithal.
I’ve lost count how many times I’ve had to verbally recite Ephesians 6:11-12 to remind myself it’s not about the here and now or anyone in particular. This is about our main focus being Christ Jesus our Lord!
