Journal of Discourses 14:160-161; “If it is necessary to have two wives, take them. If it is right, reasonable and proper and the Lord permits a man to take half a dozen wives, take them; but if the Lord says let them alone, let them alone. How long? Until we go down to the grave, if the Lord demand it.” — Brigham Young, Ogden City, June 4, 1871
Deuteronomy 17:17; “Neither shall he multiply wives to himself, that his heart turn not away: neither shall he greatly multiply to himself silver and gold.”
Oh Brigham, Brigham, Brigham…man, this guy was a piece of work.
Is this how you’d like your daughter to be looked upon?
What about your grandma?
The false picture the Church gives out of stalwart pioneer men and women who lived righteous lives only devoted to God is nothing but a façade.
Imagine the grandma who sat in this audience listening to his sermon. What reaction do you think she may have had listening to this man? Is this what you envision when you’re filling out genealogical records?
‘Taking wives’…he made it sound like he was at a cattle auction. There is absolutely nothing in the Bible warranting such behavior, nor does it lend itself to the harlotry Brigham’s trying to excuse himself for.
