Journal of Discourses 16:167-168; “When Father Adam came to assist in organizing the earth out of the crude material that was found, an earth was made upon which the children of men could live. After the earth was
prepared Father Adam came and stayed here, and there was a woman brought to him. Now I am telling you something that many of you know, it has been told to you, and the brethren and sisters should understand it. There was a certain woman brought to Father Adam whose name was Eve, because she was the first woman, and she was given to him to be his wife; I am not disposed to give any farther knowledge concerning her at present. There is no doubt but that he left many companions. The great and glorious doctrine that pertains to this I have not time to dwell upon; neither should I at present if I had time. He understood this whole machinery or system before he came to this earth; and I hope my brethren and sisters will profit by what I have told them.” – Brigham Young, Paris, Idaho, August 31, 1873
1 Corinthians 15:46-48; “Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual. 47 The first man is of the earth, earthy: the second man is the Lord from heaven. 48 As is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy: and as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.”
One of the coolest things I discovered after converting to Christianity was the consistency of our Lord. He doesn’t change and there’s no secret agenda. He lays everything out on the table from the first verse in His word to the last.
That’s why the subject matter of today’s dilemma makes me want to scratch my forehead – nonstop. Or at least until the confusion goes away…
We’re going to forego the blasphemous Adam-God teaching that Young pumped during his reign in Utah, and focus on the other outrageous teachings mentioned here; polygamy and believing that man lived in the pre-existence.
I’ve no doubt the shock I went through after reading Paul’s dissertation to the Corinthians has been a common occurrence for every ex-Mormon. And as sure as I am about this, I would imagine it’s the same reaction for those who’ve turned from the false ideology of reincarnation. This idiom in Mormonism is just another form of that; Hinduism.
Our dear sweet God has ensured that we are well informed about where we came from, when we came to be, and the total population of the pre-existence.
Let’s take a look at a handful of verses and after reading these, ask yourself if it’s really possible that mankind is eternal –
Genesis 2:7; “And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul.”
Genesis 5:1; “This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him”.
Isaiah 44:24; “Thus saith the LORD, thy redeemer, and he that formed thee from the womb, I am the LORD that maketh all things; that stretcheth forth the heavens alone; that spreadeth abroad the earth by myself”.
Zechariah 12:1; “The burden of the word of the LORD for Israel, saith the LORD, which stretcheth forth the heavens, and layeth the foundation of the earth, and formeth the spirit of man within him.”
John 8:57–58; “Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham? 58 Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.”
1 Corinthians 8:5–6; “For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many, and lords many,) 6 But to us there is but one God, the Father, of whom are all things, and we in him; and one Lord Jesus Christ, by whom are all things, and we by him.”
1 John 4:12; “No man hath seen God at any time. If we love one another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us.”
