Journal of Wilford Woodruff v. 8 p 187; “Evening Meeting. Prayer By E Stephenson. Joseph F Smith spoke One hour & 25 M. He spoke upon the Marriage in Cana at Galilee. He thought Jesus was the Bridgegroom and
Mary & Martha the brides. He also refered to Luke 10 ch. 38 to 42 verse, Also John 11 ch. 2 & 5 vers John 12 Ch 3d vers, John 20 8 to 18. Joseph Smith spoke upon these passages to show that Mary & Martha manifested much Closer relationship than Merely A Believer which looks Consistet. He did not think that Jesus who decended throug Poligamous families from Abraham down & who fulfilled all the Law even baptism by immersion would have lived and died without being married.” – [spelling in the original]
1 Timothy 1:17; “Now unto the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only wise God, be honour and glory for ever and ever. Amen.”
For reference, Jesus’ lineage can be found in the gospels of Matthew & Luke.
While there were a fair share of polygamists back in the day, it doesn’t mean it was a commandment of God, nor did their behavior produce upstanding behavior characteristics amongst the siblings. Take a look at Sarah and Hagar, or Leah and Rachel – it doesn’t take long in the narrative to see how jealousy was always present.
You’ll notice in each example the absence of God commanding these things to happen. In fact, you’ll see in Sarah and Hagar’s example that God worked around Abraham’s mess-up in spite of it all. In the case of Leah and Rachel, you’ll read how Jacob was the one who decided to marry another wife after Laban’s trickery. It had nothing to do with God ordaining, or even condoning, such a lifestyle.
All that aside, the belief that Jesus was a polygamist leaves me stunned each time I encounter this subject. I can’t imagine it for a minute, nor should anyone else for that matter. Whenever I think of Jesus, the first thing I think of is from our verse above.
When you meet our Maker face to face, will you be willing to approach Him and ask where His wives are?
If so, what do you think His reaction might be?
The lyrics for a well known Christian song used at many worship services are listed below. If you’re LDS, take a moment to read over them and maybe even listen to it – I promise you’ll be blessed!
Now unto the king eternal
Unto the King immortal
Unto the King invisible
The only wise God
The only wise God
Unto the King be glory and honour
Unto the King for ever
Unto the King be glory and honour forever
And ever, Amen, Amen
Also, the hymn that immediately comes to my mind (and based on 1Timothy. 1:17)is this one:
Immortal, Invisible, God Only Wise
Aren’t these songs and hymns wonderful for us? I love these things and without a doubt stand in awe knowing Him. I’m hoping we get to sing these things in heaven! 🙂
