History of the Church 2:189; “The Blessing of Orson Hyde
Orson Hyde’s Blessing: Oliver Cowdery called upon the Lord to smile upon him; that his faith be made perfect, and that the blessings pronounced may be realized; that he be made mighty, and be endued with powers from on high, and go forth to the nations of the earth to proclaim the Gospel, that he may escape all the pollutions of the world; that the angels shall uphold him; and that he shall go forth according to the commandment, both to Jew and Gentile, and to all nations, kingdoms and tongues; that all who hear his voice shall acknowledge him to be a servant of God; that he shall be equal with his brethren in holding the keys of the kingdom; that he may stand on the earth and bring souls till Christ comes. We know that he loves Thee, O, Lord, and may this Thy servant be able to walk through pestilence and not be harmed; and the powers of darkness have no ascendency over him; may he have power to smite the earth with pestilence; to divide waters, and lead through the Saints; may he go from land to land and from sea to sea, and may he be like one of the three Nephites.”
Ecclesiastes 2:11; “ Then I looked on all the works that my hands had wrought, and on the labour that I had laboured to do: and, behold, all was vanity and vexation of spirit, and there was no profit under the sun.”
Our Bible verse today is a fitting lesson for Orson Hyde’s life, if not all of us now! Everyone is born with a natural sense of determining right from wrong. Where we draw our knowledge from is another story, and sets forth where we’ll be spending eternity.
If we retrieve and expend the knowledge we have from the Bible, we can live with assurance we’ll be in heaven with Jesus. When we rely on extraneous sources from outside that parameter, you’re witnessing humanity corrupted with evil. Today we’re looking at a life corrupted by the evil Orson Hyde surrounded himself with.
Looking over Mr. Hyde’s blessing it’d be safe to say he fulfilled a few of the ‘prophecies’ Oliver Cowdery pronounced upon his head, alas, the life of Mormons are never quite that simple. There’s always ‘more to the story’ as they say…
Orson Hyde was the unfortunate recipient of Joe Smith’s shenanigans on more than one occasion, and when he rebelled, he was swiftly booted from the Church. His exodus was short lived and returned with full honors of apostleship, albeit, with the leaders’ ever watchful eyes over him.
Over all, Orson Hyde dutifully obeyed his prophet Joe Smith and while out on one of his missions, Smith summarily married Hyde’s wife. While he didn’t totally reject Smith’s adulterous ways, (nor his wife’s), he seemed to have a boisterous opinion about adultery in general you can read about in many of his countless sermons.
We counted 11 false prophecies in this blessing, and listed them below. You’ll find Oliver Cowdery’s words in blue font.
1-2. “Orson Hyde’s Blessing…that he be made mighty, and be endued with powers from on high…”
Orson Hyde wasn’t made mighty. Who outside of Mormonism has ever heard of him?
There’s no way the Lord God of the Bible endued Orson Hyde with His power. When you don’t follow the Lord, He doesn’t bless people in this way.
3.‘…and go forth to the nations of the earth to proclaim the Gospel…’
Orson did go forth to other nations of the earth, but proclaiming the true gospel wasn’t part of his repertoire.
4.’…that he may escape all the pollutions of the world; that the angels shall uphold him…’
This is most certainly a false prophecy & blessing. The angels didn’t uphold him, nor did they keep him from the pollutions of the world. Mr. Hyde practiced polygamy and worshiped a false god.
5.’…that he shall go forth according to the commandment, both to Jew and Gentile, and to all nations, kingdoms and tongues…’
Orson traveled to Israel and the UK, but he most certainly didn’t go to all nations.
6.’…that all who hear his voice shall acknowledge him to be a servant of God…’
This is really a hard one to believe. If this was true, it’d mean that every single person he encountered acknowledged his status of servanthood to God. Did every single person he came into contact with do this? Hmmm…this is highly unlikely since there’s no record of him converting everyone he met into Mormonism.
7.’…that he may stand on the earth and bring souls till Christ comes…’
Orson Hyde died on November 28, 1878 which makes this a false blessing and false prophecy.
8.’…may this Thy servant be able to walk through pestilence and not be harmed…’
This has to be false as well considering he died.
9.’…and the powers of darkness have no ascendency over him…’
This obviously didn’t come to pass. Orson Hyde was not a Christian and bowed the knee to the false god of Mormonism.
10.’…may he have power to smite the earth with pestilence; to divide waters, and lead through the Saints…’
Orson led the Saints over the American plains, but there’s no record of him smiting the earth with pestilence.
11.’…may he go from land to land and from sea to sea, and may he be like one of the three Nephites’
As already noted, Orson traveled extensively, however, there’s no record of him still being alive and wandering the earth like the three mysterious Nephites.
