Times & Seasons, Vol. 4, No. 11, April 15, 1843, p. 194; “There was
no Greek or Latin upon the plates from which I, through the grace of God, translated the Book of Mormon. Let the language of that book speak for itself…
…I may safely say that the word Mormon stands independent of the learning and wisdom of this generation. – Before I give a definition, however, to the word, let me say that the Bible in its widest sense, means good…and though known by various names in different languages, still its meaning is the same, and is ever in opposition to bad. We say from the…Hebrew tob; and the Egyptian, mon.
Hence, with the addition of more, or the contraction, mor, we have the word Mormon, which means, literally, more good. Yours, Joseph Smith.”
Galatians 1:8-9; “But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. 9 As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.”
I wonder…how many Mormons read Smith’s statement at the time and thought about what he said. Certainly, there had to be some in his audience who knew he was wrong!
I know we’ve looked at his remarks at other times, but what caught my attention today was the prolific bragging when explaining himself.
‘…I may safely say that the word Mormon stands independent of the learning and wisdom of this generation…’
This can only mean one thing. Smith was the repository of all earthly knowledge. Imagine – no one else before, during, or since, has had such a burden in life!
According to Joseph Smith, without a preponderance of a doubt, he was the anointed one of God, and only he could set things right. No one was smart enough to cognitively understand human’s method of language, no matter the vernacular.
In the history of mankind, no one but Smith could properly tell its inhabitants what God wanted everyone to know. No one. Ever.
Here are some questions we have today –
Have you chosen to trust a god who would only have one single human on earth with all earthly knowledge?
When Smith died, did that knowledge suddenly transfer over to Brigham Young? If it didn’t, where did it all go, and how do we retrieve it?
Why would God suddenly change the game plan out of the blue?
What do we do with the Bible and historical facts?
If God changed all the rules on how the gospel could be understood, do you feel you can trust Him now?
All that aside, what do we do with Smith’s lies? We found more than 7,200 instances where Greek and/or Latin showed up in the BoM!
