General Conference, ‘Sharing Your Light,’ October 2014; “We will not be raising the dead as did the Savior, but we can bless the dead by finding their names for temple work. Then we will indeed raise them from their spirit prison and offer them the path of eternal life.” — Neill F. Marriott

Philippians 1:9-10; “And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; 10 That ye may approve things that are excellent; that ye may be sincere and without offence till the day of Christ.”

pokemongoGone are the days of trading baseball cards and marbles, kids in the ‘90’s were opting for a ‘sophisticated’ upgrade known as Pokémon cards.

‘This topic is a controversial one’, is the way most reports refer to society’s latest fad; ‘Pokémon Go’. Three months after its initial release by Nintendo, the virtual game is still going at it, even if it isn’t talked about all the time as it once was.

Today we’re looking at the spiritual dangers of this latest craze in an effort to give a heads up to the unknowing, and to remind others of what the Bible says about discernment.

Luke 4:17-21; “And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, 18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, 19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord. 20 And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him. 21 And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.”

The Occult in Mormonism and the Life of Joseph SmithLiahona, ‘Commonly Asked Questions,’ October 2010; “Why is symbolism used in the temple?

During His earthly ministry, the Savior often taught in parables to represent eternal truths symbolically. He has directed that we be taught in a similar way in the temple. There is symbolism in the temple ordinances and covenants, their presentation, the physical setting, and the clothing worn. If you ponder the meaning of these symbols with the guidance of the Holy Ghost, they can help you recognize truth, learn about Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, and grow spiritually.”

Angel Moroni in Mayan clothesWhile gathering info for a new article earlier this week, I came across an interesting story in Mormondom.

In 2009, the Deseret News published an article ‘20 little-known facts about the Mormon Angel Moroni statue’. They showed a different Moroni statue with each fact they shared, and one in particular caught my immediate attention.

Mormon Decisions 10Times & Seasons, Vol. 4, No. 11, April 15, 1843, p. 194; “There wasJoseph Smith 8 no Greek or Latin upon the plates from which I, through the grace of God, translated the Book of Mormon. Let the language of that book speak for itself…

…I may safely say that the word Mormon stands independent of the learning and wisdom of this generation. – Before I give a definition, however, to the word, let me say that the Bible in its widest sense, means good…and though known by various names in different languages, still its meaning is the same, and is ever in opposition to bad. We say from the…Hebrew tob; and the Egyptian, mon.

Hence, with the addition of more, or the contraction, mor, we have the word Mormon, which means, literally, more good. Yours, Joseph Smith.”

Mormon Decisions 10Journal of Discourses 5:328 – 329; “Keep your spirits under the sole control of good spirits, and they will make your tabernacles honourable in the presence of God, angels, and men. If you will always keep your spirits in right subjection, you will be watching all the time, and never suffer yourselves to commit an act that you will be sorry for, and you can see that in all your life you are clear. Do not do anything that you will be sorry for.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, October 7, 1857

Mormon Decisions 10Marvelous Word and a Wonder, p 67; “…(Isaiah 29:1-4.) Isaiah saw the downfall of Ariel, or Jerusalem, at a time far in the future, “add ye year to year.” Then he seems to have been carried away in vision to witness a similar destruction of the cities of Joseph, “and it shall be unto me as Ariel.” He describes how they would be besieged and forts would be raised against them. They would be brought down and would speak out of the ground. Their speech would be “low out of the dust”; their voice would be as one that hath a familiar spirit, out of the ground; and their speech would whisper out of the dust. Now, obviously, the only way a dead people could speak “out of the ground” or “low out of the dust” would be by the written word, and this the people did through the Book of Mormon. Truly it has a familiar spirit, for it contains the words of the prophets of the God of Israel.” – LeGrand Richards

So here we are with another installment of looking at the symbols on the Nauvoo and Salt Lake Temples.  One of the reasons we’re doing this as I mentioned is to remind our readers to pray for the Mormons who attended these two temples over their summer holidays.
