Journal of Discourses 13:42 “How appropriate it would have been for Jesus, descending as he did from a race of polygamists, to have denounced this institution of plural marriage and shown its sinfulness, had it been a sin! Can we suppose, for one moment, if Patriarchal marriage were wrong, that He would, under the circumstances, have been silent concerning it or failed to denounce it in the most positive manner? Then if plural marriage be adultery and the offspring spurious, Christ Jesus is not the Christ; and we must look for another.” — George A. Smith, Salt Lake City, October 8, 1869
1 Corinthians 7:2 “Nevertheless, [to avoid] fornication, let every man have his own wife, and let every woman have her own husband.”
Matthew 19:4-6 “And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, 5 And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? 6 Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder.”
In all the years I’ve worked in ministry (25+) I’ve had a handful of people (Christians) who’ve argued that Jesus never denounced polygamy.
I find the argument interesting based on the fact Jesus told people to cleave to their wife, which most notably indicates there’s only one wife. Moreover, other epistles in the NT tell us that deacons, and bishops, should be the husband of only one wife.
We’ve discussed this topic on our sites before, but the argument that polygamy is okay with God is rather lame considering other teachings in His word denounces this practice.
There’s no doubt the Mormon people need to look for another Christ, and not just because of this topic.
Pray with us that all Mormons will know the real Jesus of the Bible!!
With Love in Christ;
Michelle
It was not a “race of polygamists” in that there is no record of more than a few men taking more than one wife.
Mr George Smith sure did think a lot of himself and expected others to believe and to follow his teachings.
“Do not deceive yourselves.If any of you (Mr Smith) think that you are wise by the standards of this age, you should become fools so that you can become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness to God. As it is written; “He catches the wise (Joe and George Smith) in their craftiness, and again,The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.” (1 Corinthians 3: 18-20)
Too bad Mr Smith never wised up. The current leaders of the LDS Church had better start wising up by reading their Bibles and ignoring the foolish ramblings of their churches former and current leaders
Okay I think I was lost for quite a bit until I read this because I thought this is a Mormon blog but just now realized this is a Christian blog. Lol I literally wrote for 15-20 minutes about my beliefs and how my Christian beliefs are totally different than Mormons and I was thinking you were a Mormon in your one writing called Plan of Salvation Means we must save ourselves. I didn’t read the writing but I went to the comments and commented and I apologize by looking at the title I assumed that you are Mormon. Lol again I apologize. When I actually read something u wrote I realized that you aren’t a Mormon lol!
