“Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.” James 4:4
This month’s Friend Magazine published an article with a list of activities for kids to ‘feel the Holy Ghost’. According to LDS apostle, Henry Eyring, this is how they can determine truth.
The reason for looking at this stems from a conversation with a dear friend who recently asked what LDS kids are taught. I answered by stating their doctrine as a whole could cause numerous issues, but confusion would be one of the most concerning. To be sure, their article is heart-wrenching, not to mention unbiblical, thus our look at this issue today.
Their list of activity ideas in the article sounds eerily similar to what one would see at a séance, which is what I experienced at an M.I.A. meeting during my teen years.
The Mutual teacher had everyone sit in a circle, and try to feel the Mormon holy ghost while thinking about dead relatives, and our last temple experience. As a special effect, we brought in the dry ice I had purchased on my way to the meeting.
The most egregious comment from their article was when they told kids the following lie –
“A testimony is a good feeling from the Holy Ghost telling you that something is true. You aren’t too young to have a testimony.”
Beloved, a testimony of the gospel is gained by studying His word. The Bible strongly discourages us to rely on feelings – Jeremiah 17:9. His word repeatedly tells us to study what He says. (See our list of scriptures at end of article.) Furthermore, determining truth has to include information outside of yourself. For more info, see Testing for Truth.
Moreover, telling young kids to rely on their feelings is tragic. Mr. Eyring and others involved in this should be ashamed! To read their article in full, see Friend, ‘Testimony and the Book of Mormon’, June 2020.
The tumultuous feelings going on inside young people change from day to day. It’s that way for many adults, and only compounded in young people with no life experience.
Please, pray for Jesus to protect the hearts of those who read the lies in their article, and for the parents to see the truth as well. Participating in activities like they purport kids should do means they must align themselves with worldly ways, not God.
Psalm 66:16 “Come and hear, all ye that fear God, And I will declare what he hath done for my soul.”
Romans 1:16 “For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”
Romans 10:17 “So faith comes from hearing, and hearing by the word of God.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”
Acts 17:11 “These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.”
With Love in Christ;
