General Conference, ‘Sustainable Societies’, October 2020 “Whether aware of it or not, every man, woman and child of every belief, place and time is imbued with the light of Christ and therefore possesses the sense of right and wrong we often call a conscience.” — D. Todd Christofferson
Romans 2:14-15 “For when the Gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these, having not the law, are a law unto themselves: 15 Which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the mean while accusing or else excusing one another”.
God’s perfect word obviously contradicts Mr. Christofferson’s theory. The following Encyclopedia of Mormonism definition for ‘Light of Christ’ is listed in our 3,000 Reasons –
‘The Light of Christ refers to the spiritual power that emanates from God to fill the immensity of space and enlightens every man, woman, and child. Other terms sometimes used to denote this same phenomenon are Holy Spirit, “Spirit of the Lord,” and “Spirit of Truth,” but it is different from the Holy Ghost. The scriptures are not always precise in the use of such terminology, and several attempts have been made to describe the various aspects of this important manifestation of God’s goodness and being.’ [emp. added]
It only takes a moment to find out what our Lord has said about this topic. Also see Melissa’s great article, ‘Light of Christ’ written not long after she left the Church. It looks as if Mr. Christofferson was relying on the EM definition, and not a reputable Bible dictionary.
Needless to say, the level of integrity someone chooses to carry around in life varies greatly from person to person. And the conscience of good and evil instilled in us is either rejected, or embraced, by each. However, it has to be pointed out, God’s Holy Spirit is NOT a person’s conscience.
Moreover, where in the Bible does God refer to Himself as a ‘phenomenon’?
The ‘Light of Christ’ is one of the terms this church uses to confuse people. Telling the truth is always so much easier, and leads people to Jesus!
Pray for Mormons to question this man’s talk, and for Jesus to prompt them to open His word to find the truth. We’re praying for Mr. Christofferson to allow Jesus into his heart!
With Love in Christ;
Michelle
