‘For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.’ Matthew 24:24.
Today is part 2 of our look at an article in the latest church magazine, Liahona, ‘What Did Moroni Teach Joseph Smith?’, January 2021.
Yesterday we looked at five lies, some of which included witchcraft, necromancy, and Joseph’s ill-gotten fame.
Today we’ll see how neither Moroni, nor Joseph, opted for defending the Lord. Moroni did nothing more than feed a teenager’s inflated ego. Based on the Church’s track record, one must wonder if this even happened at all.
If you’re LDS, we want to reiterate we don’t say these things to demean or bash you. Our hearts are broken for the way this church has lied, and led members away from Jesus, not to Him.
We pray you’ll look at the evidence and compare all of it objectively – your very soul depends on it!
As Paul Harvey used to say…now for the rest of this story!
#6 — Gospel Demoted for Witchcraft.
‘Joseph learned about gold plates buried in a nearby hill that contained “the fulness of the everlasting Gospel” (Joseph Smith—History 1:34). Moroni also told Joseph about the Urim and Thummim that God had prepared for Joseph to translate the plates (see Joseph Smith—History 1:35).’
The Urim & Thummim were rocks Smith used as tools to search for buried treasure. See BoM Translated with Peep Stones for more info.
As we mentioned in our article a couple of days ago ( Book of Mormon: Beautiful White Jews and Gentiles Settled America), the BoM does NOT contain the fulness of the gospel. It doesn’t mention temple marriage, it condemns polygamy, and its narrative carries a racist ideology.
The BoM has been revised more than 5,200 times since its first publication, and this doesn’t include typos. It can’t be everlasting if it’s been changed!
#7 — Fulfilled Promises Ignored.
‘Moroni shared with Joseph several prophecies that were about to be fulfilled about the establishment of this last dispensation and the blessings it would bring to the world.’
Moroni lied. We’re not living in the last dispensation. The dispensation we’re living in right now began at Pentecost and is known as the 6th Dispensation. It’s also known as the Dispensation of Grace. Believers are filled with God’s Holy Spirit and have accepted they are saved by grace through faith, as it says in Ephesians 2:8-9.
The last, and 7th dispensation is the Millennial Kingdom of Christ. This will begin with the Rapture where Jesus will reign for 1,000 years. For more info on the 7 dispensations, see GotQuestions.org. Clearly, everything to do with this dispensation has already been fulfilled.
#8 — Repeating Peter’s Denial of the Christ.
‘Moroni appeared to Joseph three times that night and once the next morning.’
Their article failed to mention that immediately after Moroni’s 3rd visit, a cock crowed.
We pray Mormons remember what happened when Peter denied Jesus the 3rd time in Luke 22:31-34. For more info, see ‘Moroni, Who was he?’ – our investigation of Moroni’s visit and Smith talking to dead people.
These two scenarios are more than coincidental. It’s not difficult to see how with Moroni’s help Joe Smith led many others to deny Jesus.
#9 — Adding to the Story after Declaring it’s the Same.
‘He delivered the same message but gave additional information and instruction to Joseph each time (see Joseph Smith—History 1:44–46, 49).’
In other words, Moroni did not deliver the same message with each visit. It can’t be the same if there’s added info. This is much like what Joe Smith did with his false gospel of Jesus. It’s the same in many ways but has added info.
#10 — Annihilation Didn’t Come to Pass. Here’s what the end of the article stated in Joseph Smith—History 1:44–46, 49 —
‘…he informed me of great judgments which were coming upon the earth, with great desolations by famine, sword, and pestilence; and that these grievous judgments would come on the earth in this generation.’ [emp. added]
Moroni’s visit supposedly took place in 1823. Considering a very generous time for ‘this generation’ to be 60 years, takes us to 1883. It’s been 138 years since the end of ‘this generation’, and there were no great desolations by famine, sword, or pestilence.
In closing, I gathered handful of our articles on Joseph Smith’s encounters with Moroni. Some of these are links in this series.
