Journal of Discourses 19:271 “…Jesus was begotten by the power of God and not by a mortal in the flesh. And the New Testament tells us that 
God sent his angel to visit this beautiful Virgin Mary, and to make known unto her that she was chosen of the Lord to be the Mother of Jesus who should be the Savior of this people. And the messenger or the angel sent to her was designed to prepare her mind, her heart and her faith for this great work unto which the Lord had chosen her. And he said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee, and therefore that Holy Thing that shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.” — Erastus Snow, Meeting House, Beaver City, Utah, March 3, 1878 [Note: p. 371 in link above is a misprint.]
Journal of Discourses 1:51 “Now, remember from this time forth, and forever, that Jesus Christ was not begotten by the Holy Ghost. … if the Son was begotten by the Holy Ghost, it would be very dangerous to baptize and confirm females, and give the Holy Ghost to them, lest he should beget children, to be palmed upon the Elders by the people, bringing the Elders into great difficulties. Treasure up these things in your hearts.” — Brigham Young, Great Salt Lake City, April 9, 1852
Luke 1:35 “And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”
While not disagreeing with the basic tenets of Mormonism, Mr. Snow made his comment about the Savior’s birth six months after Brigham Young’s death in 1877.
There’s obviously a huge discrepancy between the two men’s teachings!
What are the Mormon people to believe? Was Jesus begotten by the Holy Ghost, or an exalted man who became a god?
If the Mormon Jesus was begotten by the HS, what about all their teachings on how God had sex with Mary? While the Church claims members should only believe what the latest leader has said, what about those who were living at the time and believed what Mr. Snow said?
A few years ago, we wrote an article providing 85 quotes from LDS leaders stating their god had sex with the virgin Mary. See ‘What Do Mormons Think of the Virgin Mary?’ for more info. Their statements made it very clear that Jesus was conceived through man.
If you’re LDS, what are your thoughts about this? Moreover, how could Mary be a virgin if she had sex with God?
