General Conference, ‘Defending Our Divinely Inspired Constitution’, April 2021 “Because of the many threats that undermine the principles of the Constitution, Latter-day Saints have a unique responsibility to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution by praying for the Lord to guide and bless all nations and their leaders.
Learn and advocate the principles of the Constitution by seeking out wise and good persons and be knowledgeable citizens.
“No party, platform or individual candidate can satisfy all personal preferences. Each citizen must therefore decide which issues are most important to him or her at any particular time.
Then, members should seek inspiration on how to exercise their influence according to their individual priorities. This process will not be easy.” — Dallin H. Oaks
Matthew 6:31-33 “Therefore take no thought, saying, What shall we eat? or, What shall we drink? or, Wherewithal shall we be clothed? 32 (For after all these things do the Gentiles seek:) for your heavenly Father knoweth that ye have need of all these things. 33 But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Romans 8:5 “For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit.”
Colossians 3:1-4 “If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. 2 Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. 3 For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. 4 When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory.”
Matthew 22:36-37 “Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.”
Of all the things this man could’ve spoken about on Easter…
Today we have a few questions about this talk. Mr. Oaks stated –
‘Latter-day Saints have a unique responsibility to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution by praying for the Lord to guide and bless all nations and their leaders.’
How are those who aren’t LDS Americans supposed to apply what this man said to their personal life?
Why would LDS members in Nicaragua, or Japan need to defend the US Constitution?
What purpose does this serve in their life?
Where would someone in Uzbekistan find a copy of the US Constitution so they could learn and advocate the principles of the Constitution?
Who but the adversary does this benefit? Spending time on things like this doesn’t bring us closer to the Lord, but further away.
The four Bible references remind us to set our minds on things above – meaning Jesus. This life is but a vapor so we must choose what we do with our time wisely. His ill-advised comments certainly aren’t focused on the resurrection of Jesus Christ. To be sure his remarks earned a spot in our ‘Worst of the Worst Mormon Quotes’.
We’re praying members of the Church will stop to question why he didn’t focus on events the glorious morning God raised His Son from the dead!
With Love in Christ —
Michelle
