‘For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.’ 1 Corinthians 14:33
Discourses of Brigham Young, p. 271 “Tithes and Offerings — “We are trying to become Saints, and by-and-by we will actually become Saints. When men are Saints, they will bring their thousands and lay them at the feet of the Bishops, Apostles, and Prophets, saying, “Here is my money; it is now where it should be.” — Great Salt Lake City, January 17, 1858
1 Corinthians 1:2 “Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints, with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours.”
The transliteration for the word saints is hágios. It means to be set apart, sacred (physically, pure, morally blameless or religious, ceremonially, consecrated):—(most) holy (one, thing), saint. It’s G40 in Strong’s Exhaustive Concordance.
For more info on this topic you can read a great article at GotQuestions.org.
Now in light of our quick look at a concordance we have a couple of questions.
Why would Mr. Young say such things?
I’ve never heard of a legitimate pastor tell people that the body of Christ will come and lay thousands of dollars at the feet of their leaders. Have you?
Furthermore, why was Brigham telling people they’re trying to become saints? The name of their church at that time was The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. See Mormon Dilemma 551 for a chronology of the Church’s name.
You don’t try to become saints. The Bible tells us that once you choose Jesus as your Savior, you are a saint!
Yes, Brigham uttered this lie 165 years ago, however, their behavior is still very much the same. If you don’t give them money you’re not saved.
You can read of this in the rest of his speech where he said the Church had to keep chasing people home to ensure they paid the ‘uttermost farthing’ for their tithes or if the Church had helped them. See Journal of Discourses 6:175.
Last but not least – a month before Brigham delivered the speech above he also declared most LDS members were Mormons, not saints. See Mormons or Saints.
Shame on him and other LDS leaders for lying about the Lord and keeping my mother and millions of other Mormons from knowing the truth. My heart is heavy thinking about the lies they keep telling. I can’t imagine how the Lord must feel…..
Please, pray for Jesus to intervene and save these dear people!
With Love in Christ —
Michelle
[…] True Saints Lay Money at Apostles’ Feet – Brigham Young […]
Yeah, like BILLION$ & BILLION$.
The 5 million dollar SEC fine is chump change to the LD$ church.
That’s a good way to put it!
