In 1850 LDS apostle John Taylor (later to be the 3rd Prophet/President) was in Boulogne-Sur-Mer, France for a discussion with local ministers. Mr. Taylor was addressing several concerns local ministers had about Mormonism one of which was polygamy.
As you can see in the reference above, he denied their behavior and even outright denounced polygamy.
He said the Church had strict rules and cited their official statement on what it said in the 1835 Doctrine and Covenants, p. 251 —
“…we declare that we believe, that one man should have one wife; and one woman, but one husband, except in case of death, when either is at liberty to marry again… Section 101 • Statement on Marriage”
At the time he made that statement he was 42 years old and married to at least 13 women. See Polygamy and Mormon Church Leaders John Taylor 1808-1887.
It’s shocking that he’d travel all the way to France and do such a thing. It just goes to show they’ll literally go out of their way to lie.
Also noteworthy is that the Church was breaking the US Morrill Anti-Bigamy Act, not to mention what the Lord said in His word. Two of his wives (#3 & 4) were sisters.
Leviticus 18:18 “Neither shalt thou take a wife to her sister, to vex her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her life time.”
As noted above Taylor’s behavior also showed that he’s a liar because he hated what God commanded while pretending he knew the Lord.
Pray for Mormons to investigate the lies their leaders say today – especially with their upcoming General Conference.
