God the “Great Spirit”
Alma 22:9-11; “And the king said: Is God that Great Spirit that brought our fathers out of the land of Jerusalem? 10 And Aaron said unto him: Yea, he is that Great Spirit, and he created all things both in heaven and in earth. Believest thou this? 11 And he said: Yea, I believe that the Great Spirit created all things, and I desire that ye should tell me concerning all these things, and I will believe thy words.”
Why does Alma disagree with Joseph Smith?
History of the Church 6:305; “God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens!”
In the book of Abraham we encounter another problem. Here we find “ancient” teachings from Egypt proclaiming the gods organized the earth.
Abraham 4:25; “And the Gods organized the earth to bring forth the beasts after their kind, and cattle after their kind, and everything that creepeth upon the earth after its kind; and the Gods saw they would obey.”
Also see Alma 18:24-28 & 19:25 which says God is a Spirit as well.
So we went from God being a “Great Spirit” to an exalted man to the idea there are many gods.
If you’re LDS do you believe God is a spirit? Do you believe He created all things?
The term “Great Spirit” is similar to the way Native Americans refer to God so why is this in the Book of Mormon and is it the way you as a Latter-day Saint refer to God?
Which story do you believe in and hang your hat on at the end of the day?
The Bible tells us that God created the earth – Genesis 1:1 and that God is Sprit – John 4:24.
