“Roughing It”, Chapter XVI “Whenever he found his speech growing too modern, which was about every sentence or two, he ladeled in a few such scriptural phrases as, “exceeding sore,” “and it came to pass,” etc. and made things satisfactory again. “And it came to pass,” was his pet. If he had left that out, his bible would have been only a pamphlet.” — Mark Twain

Today we’re looking at one subject matter from Joseph Smith’s work, the ‘Book of Abraham’.

Joe Smith’s repeated usage of the phrase, ‘And it came to pass’ is a red flag, warning readers this piece of work isn’t from the One True God of the Bible!

We looked at the same topic with the Book of Mormon, and believe it’s a beneficial tool to use again in Smith’s other canonical works. This time around we’re asking the same question —

Is this really the work of God, or the work of man? (more…)

Paradox or Believing a Lie?

Abraham 3:22-23; “Now the Lord had shown unto me, Abraham, the intelligences that were organized before the world was; and among all these there were many of the noble and great ones; 23 And God saw these souls that they were good, and he stood in the midst of them, and he said: These I will make my rulers; for he stood among those that were spirits, and he saw that they were good; and he said unto me: Abraham, thou art one of them; thou wast chosen before thou wast born.”

Acts 10:34-35; “Then Peter opened his mouth, and said, Of a truth I perceive that God is no respecter of persons: 35 But in every nation he that feareth him, and worketh righteousness, is accepted with him.”

Mormon 7:7; “And he hath brought to pass the redemption of the world, whereby he that is found guiltless before him at the judgment day hath it given unto him to dwell in the presence of God in his kingdom, to sing ceaseless praises with the choirs above, unto the Father, and unto the Son, and unto the Holy Ghost, which are one God...”

“…with W.W. Phelps and Oliver Cowdery as scribes, I commenced the translation of some of the characters or hieroglyphics, and much to our joy found that one of the rolls contained the writings of Abraham, another the writings of Joseph of Egypt, etc., – a more full account which will appear in its place, as I proceed to examine or unfold them. Truly we can say, the Lord is beginning to reveal the abundance of peace and truth.” (History of the Church 2:236)

Mormon Decisions 10Whenever I see parts of the Mormon scripture trying to pawn off Egyptian writings as a holy message from God, the words of Isaiah come to mind. I always wonder if any Mormon has seen what Isaiah wrote, and if so, what’s their response to God’s warning?

Mormon Decisions 10Comprehensive History of the Church, Vol.2, Ch.47, p.128; “This work is rich both in doctrine and in historical incidents. Of the latter the fact of the large influence (if not identity) of Egyptian religious ideas in Chaldea in the days of Abraham is established; the descent of the black race, Negro, from Cain, the first murderer; the preservation of that race through the flood by the wife of Ham–“Egyptus,” which in the Chaldean signifies “Egypt,” “which signifies that which is forbidden”–the descendants of “Egyptus” were cursed as pertaining to the priesthood–that is, they were barred from holding that divine power; the origin also of the Egyptians–these things, together with the account of Abraham migrating from Chaldea to Egypt, constitute the chief historical items that are contained in the book.”

LDSEarlier this year (July 2014), the LDS Church published another essay for its Gospel Topics section of their website.  Its title is ‘Translation and Historicity of the Book of Abraham’.  The essays have touched on a number of controversial subjects and this time around proved no different. This latest essay was yet another stab at covering up truth and making excuses for a book in their beloved canon.

Old-Testament-Gospel-Doctrine-Teachers-Manual-35570000Like the first lesson in their study of the Old Testament lesson two has very little to do with the Bible, but has many references to other books in their canon.

This next lesson focuses on the Mormon belief that all of us lived before we came to earth in a premortal life with God. In this premortal life we lived as spirit children of God his goddess wife/wives. These spirit children include every person who has ever been born including Jesus and Satan, and 1/3 of the spirits who chose to follow Satan.

Old-Testament-Gospel-Doctrine-Teachers-Manual-35570000This year members of the Mormon Church will be studying the Old Testament in Sunday school. We thought it would be interesting and informative to our readers for us to take a look at what they’re being taught each Sunday and then compare that to the word of God.

Facsimile 3In our look at Facsimile 3 from the Book of Abraham it’s important to keep in mind its original purpose.

Funerary documents have been found in tombs of the pharaohs all throughout Egypt. They were inscribed for a few purposes, one of which was to provide the deceased pharaoh instructions on how to get to heaven. The scrolls were also produced to provide instructions on how to mummify people after death and they also provided a great pictorial of their gods and the ceremonies they believed would happen once they reached heaven.

Facsimile 1The Pearl of Great Price is one of the four books that make up the canonical works of Mormonism. Each of the writings in this collection of holy Mormon writ was produced to malign and discredit the nature and character of God we as Christians know in the Bible. You’ll find no less than five “God inspired” works in the PofGP.

Facsimile 1There’s certainly been no lack of controversy about Facsimile 1 in the Book of Abraham. From the time of its first publication in 1842, the authenticity of Joseph Smith’s ability to translate Egyptian has been in question.

Egyptologists then and now have denounced his work referring to it as fictitious pandering and no wonder, for not one hieroglyph in the Book of Abraham facsimiles have produced true interpretations as found in Egypt.   Given Smith’s notorious track record his intentions have come into question and rightly so with this menagerie of false prophecies.
