On lds.org we noticed they’ve created their own version of an Advent Calendar. You can download the calendar by following the link below.

The introduction to the calendar reads –

“Each Christmas, we celebrate the life of Jesus Christ, the Light of the World. By following His teachings, we let his light shine—in our lives and in the lives of others. This year, use this calendar for inspiration as you plan your Christmas activities to help #LightTheWorld by serving those in need.”

Mark 8:36; “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

Kimball Conference Report, April 1974, p. 187; “I don’t know if you receive them, but every week, every mail, I receive two or three or a dozen applications for charity, from all over the world saying: “Please send us money to help these poor people that are starving and homeless.”

Now then our work should go to our own people first, of course, and I have recently made up my mind. I just throw them into a pile and think, Well, there is another $5.00 that could go to the fast offerings… … “Bishops, don’t let yourselves be imposed upon.”

the-sabbathNot long ago the Mormon Church highlighted an article on their site titled “How Would Your Family Describe the Sabbath?” In the article the author talks about noticing that her children don’t seem to enjoy Sundays. In it she shares the conversation she had with them, and the ideas they come up with to help them get more out of their Sabbath day observance.

flowers-cartoon-8The Visiting Teaching Message this month focuses on the forgiveness and mercy of Jesus Christ and how Mormons can apply it to their lives.

As I began reading the message I was struck by the quote from Dieter F. Uchtdorf where he said: “Forgiveness for our sins comes with conditions”.

He then goes on to say. “We must repent, and we must be willing to forgive others.”

Mormon ChannelRecently the Mormon Chanel has been posting Yoga on their social networks. For some odd reason I was surprised that Mormons are into this type of spiritualism. Yet according to a Pew Research Study 27% of Mormons believe in this spiritual practice.

Mormon Lifestyles1As I look at the different videos on YouTube by members of the Mormon Church, I find myself wondering how far are they willing to go be seen as “one of the guys (or gals)”? I’ve seen link after link of different parodies of songs members of the Church have made to promote something about their religion.

A new thing they seem to be into is taking popular songs and making it “their own”. Below are just a few examples of this:

flowers-cartoon-8The message the visiting teachers are to share this month with the ladies they visit is on Jesus’ role as Comforter.

In the message Linda S. Reeves, second counselor in the Relief Society general presidency is quoted;

“We must feel and see for ourselves and then help all of Heavenly Father’s children to feel and see and know that our Savior has taken upon Himself not only all our sins but also our pains and our suffering and afflictions so that He can know what we feel and how to comfort us. “

Old-Testament-Gospel-Doctrine-Teachers-Manual-35570000The purpose of this next lesson is for the class members to learn what it means to “partake of the Lord’s spiritual water and bread, sustain his chosen leaders, and obey his commandments so he can make of them a “holy nation.”

It covers the Israelites murmuring because they were hungry and thirsty, and then how the Lord blessed them with water, manna and quail. It compares the water that came from the rock Moses hit with his staff and the manna that fell from the sky to the precepts of Mormonism, and is basically another lesson on how you can work your way into the presence of God.

escaping the prophetIn case you didn’t know TLC has added yet another polygamy themed show to their lineup, this one is a little different than the ones they’ve shown in the past. The show’s aptly titled Escaping the Prophet.

Instead of showing women embracing the polygamist lifestyle the show’s focused on women wanting to run from it. It follows Flora Jessop and Brandon Jeffs as they reach out and help those seeking refuge from the FLDS community and the bondage this religion has over them.

Old-Testament-Gospel-Doctrine-Teachers-Manual-35570000Like the first lesson in their study of the Old Testament lesson two has very little to do with the Bible, but has many references to other books in their canon.

This next lesson focuses on the Mormon belief that all of us lived before we came to earth in a premortal life with God. In this premortal life we lived as spirit children of God his goddess wife/wives. These spirit children include every person who has ever been born including Jesus and Satan, and 1/3 of the spirits who chose to follow Satan.

salt lake mormon temple 2New Testament Student Manual, pg 23; “When Herod’s edict went forth to destroy the young children, John was about six months older than Jesus, and came under this hellish edict, and Zacharias caused his mother to take him into the mountains, where he was raised on locusts and wild honey. When his father refused to disclose his hiding place, and being the officiating high priest at the Temple that year, was slain by Herod’s order, between the porch and the altar, as Jesus said.” (Teachings, p. 261. Compare Matthew 23:35.) Zacharias died, then, to save his son; he died a noble martyr, perhaps the first of the Christian era.”

flowers-cartoon-8The Visiting Teaching Message for September 2013 is on Self-Reliance, and focuses on being temporally and spiritually self-reliant.

Being self-reliant in and of itself is a good thing. We should desire to be a little more self-reliant and not be dependent on individuals or government programs to provide for us. However it’s when the desire to be so self– reliant makes you think it’s all up to you, and you don’t need God’s provision or help you run the risk of being under His condemnation.

Jesus’ Power

Mormon Decisions 10New Testament Student Manual, pg 25; “Jesus was perfectly obedient, and because he was, “he received all power, both in heaven and on earth.” (D&C 93:17. Emphasis added.) But Jesus did not receive this great power and glory all at once. He received it piecemeal, step by step, degree by degree, “line upon line, precept upon precept” (D&C 128:21) until he received a fulness of the glory of the Father (see D&C 93:11–17).”

polygamy1While it seems our focus and posts on topics like polygamy aren’t of much value today, I can personally assure you they are!

Even though polygamy isn’t being openly practiced in mainstream Mormonism there’s still a lot of it around – even in Utah of all places…

(EDIT: I wanted to let our readers know I made a small change in this article. I posted the wrong month for the message. It should have been July and not August.)

Romans 1:16 – For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

flowers-cartoon-8The Visiting Teaching Message for July 2013 is Teaching and Learning the Gospel. It’s so important to know the gospel of Jesus Christ and to share what you know with others. There are many false gospels, beliefs and teachings in this world that will lure you away from Jesus Christ if you let them.

Hello, soon I’ll be launching my new blog designed especially for the LDS woman. Using various LDS resources from the Visiting Teaching Message to the lessons in Relief Society on Sunday morning I hope to offer insight that will draw the women who read my blog closer to Jesus Christ.

There are many challenges and expectation LDS women face daily whether they’re young or old, married or single. One thing in common with all the internal and external battles they face is perfection. Although I’ve heard many Mormons deny it the sad fact is with membership in the church comes the desire and command to be perfect.

I hope and pray that through my blog I will be able to offer the women who come there some encouragement, and help them replace the negative dialog going in their heads with God’s truth. And know the love of the real Jesus Christ.

The new blog is titled LDS Sister’s Corner, web address is  http://ldssisterscorner.wordpress.com/

In Christ,

Melissa Grimes

How Mormonism Attacks Christianity

Christian Church/Bavaria“The story of the Bible’s persecution is an arresting one. During the first three centuries of the Christian era the Roman Emperors sought to destroy God’s Word. One of them, named Diocletian, believed that he had succeeded. He had slain so many Christians and destroyed so many Bibles, that when the lovers of the Bible remained quiet for a season and kept in hiding, he imagined that he had made an end of the Scriptures. So elated was he at this achievement, he ordered a medal to be struck inscribed with the words, “The Christian religion is destroyed and the worship of the gods restored.” One wonders what that emperor would think if he returned to this earth today and found that more had been written about the Bible than about any other thousand books put together, and that the Bible which enshrines the Christian faith is now translated into more than four hundred languages and is being sent out to every part of the earth!” – A.W. Pink, The Divine Inspiration of the Bible

A few years ago I compiled a list of LDS quotes that contain disparaging remarks about Christianity. Since that time I’ve noticed there were many more worthy of being included in my list so I’ve updated it and placed it on the front page sidebar of the blog for easy access.

In light of the Church’s new motives in wanting members to proselytize on the internet I feel it’s our duty as Christians to be prepared in knowing what we’re up against and for us to warn our friends and neighbors. With this latest gig of theirs it’s like they’re right in the living rooms of America and the world.

Below you’ll see my original article with the updated quotes. You’ll notice their attitude towards the body of Christ isn’t exactly loving and it wasn’t just one or two church authorities’ comments made a long time ago – this continues even today.

Name of the Church

The Importance of a Name”, Liahona and Ensign, November 2011; “The name the Savior has given to His Church tells us exactly who we are and what we believe. We believe that Jesus Christ is the Savior and the Redeemer of the world. He atoned for all who would repent of their sins, and He broke the bands of death and provided the resurrection from the dead. We follow Jesus Christ.” — M. Russell Ballard

Deceivers

“He Lives”, Ensign, Nov. 1999, 89″; “As one of His Apostles, authorized to bear witness of Him, I solemnly testify that I know that the Savior lives, that He is a resurrected, glorified personage of perfect love. I witness that He gave His life that we might live with Him eternally. He is our hope, our Mediator, our Redeemer.” – Richard S. Scott
