The message for this month’s Visiting Teaching Lesson was called, ‘Pray for Each Sister by Name’. Click on link to read it in full.

The object of this lesson is for members to know the person they’re assigned to on a deeper level, rather than a surface knowledge of the one they’re caring for in their visits.

While that sounds admirable, we have to take into consideration what their leaders added to the fray…sigh…as you’ll see, it becomes quite laborious, and far from truth.

In Christ Alone

“In Christ alone my hope is found;
He is my light, my strength, my song;
This cornerstone, this solid ground,
Firm through the fiercest drought and storm.
What heights of love, what depths of peace,
When fears are stilled, when strivings cease!
My comforter, my all in all—
Here in the love of Christ I stand.

In Christ alone, Who took on flesh,
Fullness of God in helpless babe!
This gift of love and righteousness,
Scorned by the ones He came to save.
Till on that cross as Jesus died,
The wrath of God was satisfied;
For ev’ry sin on Him was laid—
Here in the death of Christ I live…

Each month the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints publishes a section on their website for their Visiting Teachers. Until recently, one could find a lesson plan to follow and share with those whom they’re assigned to visit. At first glance the new format looks pretty harmless, but don’t let looks fool you!

Now they’re wanting the Visiting Teachers to basically ‘wing it’ when they go out on their monthly visits. Instead of providing a format for teachers to follow, they’re instructed to ‘pray and seek inspiration’  for what they should share with the one they’re visiting.

The title for this month’s Visiting Teaching Message is Willing to Bear One Another’s Burdens.

It starts off by quoting Thomas S. Monson, who said “We are the Lord’s hands here upon the earth, with the mandate to serve and to lift His children. He is dependent upon each of us.” The
‘we’ Monson is referring to here are the members of the Mormon Church.

The message also quotes Henry B. Eyring, “A great change began in your heart when you came into the Church. You made a covenant, and you received a promise that began changing your very nature. …

“… You promised that you would help the Lord make [others’] burdens light and be comforted. You were given the power to help lighten those loads when you received the gift of the Holy Ghost”

During the months of May and November Mormons are encouraged to pick a talk from the previous General Conference to share with those who they Visit Teach. As soon as I saw the title of the talk I’m about to share with you I knew this was the one! 😊

The title is:

“The Book of Mormon: What Would Your Life Be Like without It?” by President Russell M. Ballard

Why is it Mormon leaders are so concerned about their people reading the Book of Mormon? Could it be that they are afraid if the members of the Church are getting into their Bibles, and studying them daily, they will see just how wrong Mormonism is?

The Visiting Teaching Message for the month of October is titled Enfolding with Love Those Who Stray.

The message encourages those who have loved ones who have left Mormonism to love them and to speak to them kindly, and not speak to them in anger, or harshly. My first thought was, if the Church members need to be reminded to do this, then they have bigger problems than someone leaving the Church.

The Visiting Teaching Message this month is titled “Of One Heart”.

The message begins with M. Russell Ballard stating;

“At the heart of the English word atonement is the word one. If all mankind understood this, there would never be anyone with whom we would not be concerned, regardless of age, race, gender, religion, or social or economic standing. We would strive to emulate the Savior and would never be unkind, indifferent, disrespectful, or insensitive to others.”

Take My Life and Let it Be

Take my life and let it be
Consecrated, Lord, to Thee.
Take my moments and my days,
Let them flow in endless praise.

Take my hands and let them move
At the impulse of Thy love.
Take my feet and let them be
Swift and beautiful for Thee.

Take my voice and let me sing,
Always, only for my King.
Take my lips and let them be
Filled with messages from Thee.

Take my silver and my gold,
Not a mite would I withhold.
Take my intellect and use
Every pow’r as Thou shalt choose.

Take my will and make it Thine,
It shall be no longer mine.
Take my heart, it is Thine own,
It shall be Thy royal throne.

Take my love, my Lord, I pour
At Thy feet its treasure store.
Take myself and I will be
Ever, only, all for Thee.

Ensign, ‘Living a Consecrated Life,’ August 2017

As you can see in its title, the Visiting Teaching Message this month focused on the meaning of the word consecrate.

The hymn listed above was written by Frances Havergal in 1874. Although frail her whole life, she gave all she had to God. She memorized the Psalms, Isaiah, and most of the New Testament. She also learned Greek and Hebrew. This devout Christian was a model of being sold out to God! May we all be so blessed to start living that life ourselves today!

LDS apostle Christofferson actually defined the word correctly in the beginning of his talk, but his understanding of it was short-lived. His explanation only got worse as he continued to provide references of what other LDS leaders said about this subject.

Matthew 11:28 “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Ensign, ‘That They May Be One,’ July 2017

As noted above, the title of June’s Visiting Teaching Message is, ‘That They May Be One’. As the saying goes, this is ‘one of those’ in the annals of LDS teachings that’s filled with misinterpretations, and misapplications of His word.

There were two important teachings, and three pivotal comments in this lesson that were so bad, we’re taking a quick look at them here. When you have the opportunity to speak with your Mormon loved ones, share your thoughts, and ask for their opinion!

This teaching was heavy on the road trip of guilt and shame, as it detoured around the true meaning of Jesus’ obedience to the Father.

The title for this month’s Visiting Teaching Message is Priesthood Power through Keeping Covenants.

The article begins by quoting Neil L. Anderson who said:

“As you worthily participate in the ordinances of the priesthood, the Lord will give you greater strength, peace, and eternal perspective. Whatever your situation, your home will be ‘blessed by the strength of priesthood power.’

Then the question is asked,

“How do we invite priesthood power into our lives?”

My answer is, why would you want to?

I’ve chosen to write this month’s Visiting Teaching Message on Carol F. McConkie’s General Conference talk titled, ‘The Beauty of Holiness’.

In her talk, she said;

“Holiness is in the striving and the struggle to keep the commandments and to honor the covenants we have made with God. Holiness is making the choices that will keep the Holy Ghost as our guide. Holiness is setting aside our natural tendencies and becoming “a saint through the atonement of Christ the Lord.” “Every moment of [our lives] must be holiness to the Lord.”

The title for April’s message is Oath and Covenant of the Priesthood.

Just by looking at the title alone I can see how this could easily turn into a very, very long article, but for the sake of your time, and my sanity, I’ll try to keep it short. If you’d like to indulge in some further reading on Mormon Priesthood, I’ve provided some links below.

Okay, before we begin, and  in case you’re not sure what the Mormons mean by “priesthood” here’s a short definition:

“priesthood is the power and authority that God gives to man to act in all things necessary for the salvation of God’s children. The blessings of the priesthood are available to all who receive the gospel.” (lds.org, Priesthood)

visiting-teaching-message The Visiting Teaching Message this month is titled ‘The Enabling Power of Jesus Christ and His Atonement’. The message begins with Philippians 4:13: “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”

It followed this quote from Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Indeed it is by the grace of God that, if we humble ourselves and have faith, weak things can become strong.” (emphasis mine)

visiting-teaching-message February’s Visiting Teaching Message is titled, “Christ’s Atonement is Evidence of God’s Love”.

While Christians can agree that God showed His love for the world by sending His Son to die upon a the cross as a propitiation for our sins, that’s as far as it goes when it comes to agreeing with this article.

At the beginning of the message Elder D. Todd Christofferson is quoted, he says:

“The Savior’s suffering in Gethsemane and His agony on the cross redeem us from sin by satisfying the demands that justice has upon us.” (April 2013 General Conference)”

John 4:14, 24; “But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. 24 God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth.”

visiting-teaching-message The Visiting Teaching Message for January 2017 focused on the purpose of the Relief Society while using three biblical passages.

Linda K. Burton, Relief Society General President, told members their purpose was to “prepare women for the blessings of eternal life”. That sounds interesting, however, nothing in the lesson explained what those blessings in the eternal bliss would entail.

Leviticus 26:11-12; “And I will set my tabernacle among you: and my soul shall not abhor you. 12 And I will walk among you, and will be your God, and ye shall be my people.”

Liahona, ‘Family Joy Is Found in Righteousness,’ December 2016flowers-cartoon-8

In this month’s Visiting Teaching Message, Mormons were reminded their happiness and joy in the holiday season is found in their own righteousness. The apostle Henry Eyring told members the following –

“We can decide that we will do all we can to bring down the powers of heaven into [our] family.” And we’re most likely to promote love, service, obedience, and happiness in our homes by “[our children’s] hearing the word of God and then trying it in faith. If they do, their natures will be changed in a way that produces the happiness they seek.”4

flowers-cartoon-8For the month of November, I’ve chosen to center my Visiting Teaching Message around the talk Elder Gary E. Stevenson gave during last month’s General Conference. His talk as titled “Look to the Book, Look to the Lord”.

In his message Elder Stevenson expresses his view of how the Book of Mormon is the keystone to the Mormon faith, and how having a testimony of it can strengthen one’s faith.

He said-

“You may also find that as you stand and bear witness of the Book of Mormon, you will feel the same spirit of confirmation. The Holy Ghost will speak to your heart. You can also feel this same spirit of confirmation when you hear others share their testimonies of the Book of Mormon. Each of these spiritual witnesses can lead to the Book of Mormon becoming the keystone of your testimony.”

flowers-cartoon-8This month’s message teaches us about the importance of eternal families, the role they will play in eternity, and touches on how The Fall made it all come together.

Mormons are all about the earthly, biological family we all have, and keeping those families intact throughout eternity. “Families are Forever” is one saying they like to use to reel people into the Church, because if the Church is all about the family then it must be approved of by God, right?

flowers-cartoon-8In this month’s Ensign the Visiting Teaching Message is titled Parenthood Is a Sacred Duty. Despite the title chosen for the message, the message offers very little guidance as to why they believe family is so important.

The article pulls a quote by Quentin L. Cook, from the May 2015 issue of the Ensign where he says: “If we faithfully have family prayer, scripture study, family home evening, priesthood blessings, and Sabbath day observance,” …….” our children will … be prepared for an eternal home in heaven, regardless of what befalls them in a difficult world.

flowers-cartoon-8The Visiting Teaching Message in August focuses on church members nurturing their families.

Anytime I hear Mormons talk about the importance of families, or recall their old commercials that ended with the line “families it’s about time” (remember those?), I shake my head in disgust and disbelief because I know that’s not what they truly believe.

flowers-cartoon-8Questions for Today:

Which is of greater worth; giving birth, or Blood of Christ?

How many babies are equivalent to Jesus’ spilt blood?

Before we begin this month’s Visiting Teaching Message we wanted to address a comment we received from a visitor (presumably LDS from the tone), and let him/her know we’ve been praying for them, and will continue to do so! The March 2016 VT Message must’ve struck a nerve because it was the 3rd time ‘Anonymous’ has written in response to our article.
