 The title for this month’s Visiting Teaching Message is Priesthood Power through Keeping Covenants.

The article begins by quoting Neil L. Anderson who said:

“As you worthily participate in the ordinances of the priesthood, the Lord will give you greater strength, peace, and eternal perspective. Whatever your situation, your home will be ‘blessed by the strength of priesthood power.’

Then the question is asked,

“How do we invite priesthood power into our lives?”

My answer is, why would you want to?

Mormon Decisions 10Ensign, “The Glorious Day of Priesthood Restoration,” June 2015; “When the Savior Jesus Christ came to earth, one of the first things He did was organize His Church…L Tom Perry

Later on He took Peter, James, and John up into a mount apart, and there Peter received the keys of the priesthood (see Matthew 17:1–9; see also 16:18–19). Peter became the one responsible for holding all the keys on earth in leading the Church after the departure of the Savior…” – L. Tom Perry

Mormon Decisions 10Today we’re comparing the requirements needed to hold the Melchizedek Priesthood. The first example comes from the LDS Church and the other examples comes from God’s word. We’re praying Mormons give the biblical requirements an honest read and will desire to know why God set such a high standard.

Encyclopedia of Mormonism, p 882, 884; “Specific standards of worthiness to receive the Melchizedek Priesthood include personal integrity, chastity, obedience to the divine laws of health, and faithful contribution of tithes to the Church. Beyond these traits, it is expected that men will progress in developing attributes of godliness….

salt lake mormon temple 2Conference Report, April 1939, Second Day – Morning Meeting, pg 59; “PUNISHMENT OF THOSE NOT VALIANT.  The negro is an unfortunate man. He has been given a black skin. But that is as nothing compared with that greater handicap that he is not permitted to receive the Priesthood and the ordinances of the temple, necessary to prepare men and women to enter into and enjoy a fulness of glory in the celestial kingdom.  What is the reason…We are told that Michael and his angels fought, and we understand that we stood with Christ our Lord, on the platform, “Father, thy will be done, and the glory be thine forever.” I cannot conceive our Father consigning his children to a condition such as that of the negro race, if they had been valiant in the spirit world in that war in heaven…Somewhere along the line were these spirits, indifferent perhaps, and possibly neutral in the war.” – George F. Richards

Facsimile 2 Side by sideAs a Mormon I remember seeing the Egyptian hieroglyphics in the Pearl of Great Price.  Not knowing what they meant or their purpose I wrote them off as a spooky drawing of the Mormon god I didn’t know.  It wasn’t until I began my own study of the Church that I began wondering what Egyptian hieroglyphics had to do with God’s word.

Who holds the keys to the priesthood in the LDS Church?

The Mormon Apostle Bruce McConkie had this to say about the keys of Mormon priesthood;

President Joseph F. Smith said: “What is a key?’ It is the right or privilege which belongs to and comes with the priesthood to have communication with God. Is not that a key? Most decidedly. We may not enjoy the blessings, or key, very much, but the key is in the priesthood. It is the right to enjoy the blessing of communication with the heavens, and the privilege and authority to administer in the ordinances of the gospel of Jesus Christ…You who hold the priesthood have the key or the authority, the right, the power or privilege to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ…” (Gospel Doctrine, 5th ed., p. 142.)” – Mormon Doctrine, pg. 410
