While it seems our focus and posts on topics like polygamy aren’t of much value today, I can personally assure you they are!
Even though polygamy isn’t being openly practiced in mainstream Mormonism there’s still a lot of it around – even in Utah of all places…
The polygamists of YFZ Ranch in Texas garners a lot of attention when we see women and young girls dressed in pioneer style clothing, but those cases are getting the attention because of their clothing. The truth is that if you live in Utah or any of the surrounding states, chances are good that your neighbor is a polygamist. They have “normal” jobs, wear clothing just like you do and attend public schools.
In addition to that, they might even attend the local Mormon ward (congregation) they’re assigned to or fill the city council seat in your community. By and large the unknowing general population would be shocked if they knew just how many polygamists there are living in Utah alone.
Sometimes the large family next door is hiding a dark secret. If the dad isn’t around a lot and the mom and kids are, there might be a polygamist living there. The family might be just one of his wives and their kids while he has three or four other families in the same town.
Those polygamists along with the Warren Jeffs and Tom Greens we hear about in the news are practicing true Mormonism. The mainstream LDS Church has gone out of its way to publicly denounce the actions of polygamists and we find that strange.
It’s strange because Mormon scriptures still teach and proclaim that polygamy is the only way to true salvation. It’s strange because they’re denouncing the very thing Joseph Smith fought so hard for and was actually killed because of. The “principle” is the foundation of Mormonism.
We also find their reaction to be odd because of what Mormons do in the temple. If a male Mormon has a wife who has died he can marry another wife here on earth and have her sealed to him in heaven for eternity. This means he’s busy building his polygamous family while here on earth and not breaking the laws of the land.
Mormonism has indeed evolved since the days of Joe and friends, but that should be expected. The whole church is founded on the premise that God is ever revealing himself to us and we can only learn “line upon line” and “precept upon precept”. Ironically, if Smith, Young or any of the other early leaders of Mormonism were alive today, they wouldn’t qualify for a temple recommend. Hmmm…whodda thunk? I wonder if he’d still hold the rock star status he does…
