Facsimile 3In our look at Facsimile 3 from the Book of Abraham it’s important to keep in mind its original purpose.

Funerary documents have been found in tombs of the pharaohs all throughout Egypt. They were inscribed for a few purposes, one of which was to provide the deceased pharaoh instructions on how to get to heaven. The scrolls were also produced to provide instructions on how to mummify people after death and they also provided a great pictorial of their gods and the ceremonies they believed would happen once they reached heaven.

Facsimile 1The Pearl of Great Price is one of the four books that make up the canonical works of Mormonism. Each of the writings in this collection of holy Mormon writ was produced to malign and discredit the nature and character of God we as Christians know in the Bible. You’ll find no less than five “God inspired” works in the PofGP.

Facsimile 1There’s certainly been no lack of controversy about Facsimile 1 in the Book of Abraham. From the time of its first publication in 1842, the authenticity of Joseph Smith’s ability to translate Egyptian has been in question.

Egyptologists then and now have denounced his work referring to it as fictitious pandering and no wonder, for not one hieroglyph in the Book of Abraham facsimiles have produced true interpretations as found in Egypt.   Given Smith’s notorious track record his intentions have come into question and rightly so with this menagerie of false prophecies.

“Translated from the papyrus, by Joseph Smith…A Translation of some ancient Records, that have fallen into our hands from the catacombs of Egypt. – The Writings of Abraham while he was in Egypt, called the Book of Abraham, by his own hand upon papyrus.” – Intro to Book of Abraham

Facsimile 2 Side by sideAs a Mormon I remember seeing the Egyptian hieroglyphics in the Pearl of Great Price.  Not knowing what they meant or their purpose I wrote them off as a spooky drawing of the Mormon god I didn’t know.  It wasn’t until I began my own study of the Church that I began wondering what Egyptian hieroglyphics had to do with God’s word.

God the “Great Spirit”

salt lake mormon temple 2Alma 22:9-11; “And the king said: Is God that Great Spirit that brought our fathers out of the land of Jerusalem? 10 And Aaron said unto him: Yea, he is that Great Spirit, and he created all things both in heaven and in earth. Believest thou this? 11 And he said: Yea, I believe that the Great Spirit created all things, and I desire that ye should tell me concerning all these things, and I will believe thy words.”

Why does Alma disagree with Joseph Smith?

Kolob the Center of Our Universe

salt lake mormon temple 2Behold the Lamb of God, pg 29, 46; “Kolob, the Governor…But this fact seems reasonably clear that this hub or center of a galaxy exists and performs, in broad principle, the functions of Kolob and that Kolob’s existence and function were known about four thousand years before our day.” – J. Reuben Clark

Kolob Time

Mormon Decisions 10Abraham 5:13; “But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the time that thou eatest thereof, thou shalt surely die. Now I, Abraham, saw that it was after the Lord’s time, which was after the time of Kolob; for as yet the Gods had not appointed unto Adam his reckoning.”

“This Book” in Egyptian Hieratic Writings

Mormon Decisions 10In Smith’s estimation of the ungodly hieratic Egyptian writings we’ve learned just how uninspired this man really was but what’s the take away for us personally in our relationship with Jesus?

Was there ever a time you wanted something so badly that it’s all you could think of until you either went out and purchased it or made it happen?  Was it because it’s what you wanted or what God had laid on your heart?

Soul of Osiris Sheshonk

Mormon Decisions 10The Holy God of Israel, the One and Only True God of the Universe has given specific directives and nothing in His word gives permission to worship or represent Him in any form. In fact having images is a form of idolatry.

Exodus 20:3-4; “Thou shalt have no other gods before me. 4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth:”

Ezekiel 20:7; “Then said I unto them, Cast ye away every man the abominations of his eyes, and defile not yourselves with the idols of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.”

Kolob and Khnumu

Mormon Decisions 10For the next couple of weeks we’re taking a look at Facsimile 2 from the Book of Abraham. In the summer of 1835 Joseph Smith told Michael Chandler, a traveling salesman, that he could interpret the papyri he was marketing through the eastern seaboard of the US.

As it turned out Smith’s interpretation of the papyri and hypocephalus (funerary disk) was ridiculed by Egyptologists who were able to show with definitive proof everything Smith said was a fraud. Chandler’s papyri were excerpts from Hor’s Book of Breathings and The Book of the Dead which were funerary instructions.  The hypocephalus was a depiction of Egyptian gods and spells. The Church purchased his wares for $2,400 after Joseph told everyone the papyri were actually writings from the patriarch Abraham. In 1880 Smith’s translations were canonized in Mormon scripture and known today by members as the Book of Abraham.

February 17 – Hebrews 1:5 is clear about what God said in relation to angels and Jesus Christ.  “For unto which of the angels said he at any time, THOU ART MY SON, THIS DAY HAVE I BEGOTTEN THEE?  And again, I WILL BE TO HIM A FATHER, AND HE SHALL BE TO ME A SON?”

_____

Mormons believe that Jesus and Lucifer are literally spiritually begotten by God and the Heavenly Mother.  Ask them what they think about this verse.

_____

“The contention in heaven was-Jesus said there would be certain souls that would not be saved; and the devil said he could save them all, and laid his plans before the grand council, who gave their vote in favor of Jesus Christ.  So the devil rose up in rebellion against God, and was cast down, with all who put up their heads for him”.  Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, pg. 357.

November 15 – Colossians 1:16-17; “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him:  And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”

_____

There are two problems with the Mormon quote today.  First, they do not believe that Jesus created the earth; they believe he helped organize it (Abraham 4:1).  Secondly, they do not believe in the Deity (D&C 130:22).

3 Nephi 9:15-16; “Behold, I am Jesus Christ the Son of God. I created the heavens and the earth, and all things that in them are. I was with the Father from the beginning. I am in the Father, and the Father in me; and in me hath the Father glorified his name.  I came unto my own, and my own received me not. And the scriptures concerning my coming are fulfilled.”
