Mormon Ads and the Presidential Campaign
Journal of Discourses 2:182; “Brethren and sisters, our friends wish to know our feelings towards the Government. I answer, they are first-rate, and we will prove it too, as you will see if you only live long enough, for that we shall live to prove it is certain; and when the Constitution of the United States hangs, as it were, upon a single thread, they will have to call for the “Mormon” Elders to save it from utter destruction; and they will step forth and do it.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, February 18, 1855
Mitt Romney visited Seattle today to gain support for his campaign. On the local news we get here for the noon hour they decided to interview a few local Mormons to ask their opinions about the controversy surrounding their church.
Of course all the people they interviewed cried out they’re not a cult and were actually quite surprised people didn’t think of them as a Christian church.
Funny thing about this is that my husband Kirk was just as surprised they’d say this because when he joined the Mormon Church they went out of their way to tell him that they are not a Christian church.
All that to say the Church and its members want to make sure everyone knows the ads on the television have nothing at all to do with the presidential campaign. Yeah…okay…
As I was thinking about this topic just this morning I wondered how long it’d take them to come out and tell people that the ads are just a coincidence. Make no mistake my friends, the Mormon Church has a fantastic PR program and there’s no end to the budget when it comes to these types of things.
And along with this one of the oldest prophecies in the Mormon Church comes to mind. It was referred to as the White Horse Prophecy, indicating the Church would come in and save the day (see quote at top of article). I remember as a child how they taught us the Mormon Church would one day run America. Pride for being a Mormon and an American intertwined through my young blood as I sat in Church thinking of how wonderful it would be if everybody was a Mormon and we wouldn’t be persecuted any longer.
So when I see the ads, the campaigns run by slick business men who don’t care for you as an American, but only care for their own heritage it gives me pause.
What do you think? Are the ads just a coincidence or a well thought out plan to introduce the public at large to Mormonism all while there are two Mormons running for president?
The ads may not have been a coincidence, but I hardly think it matters.
The thing is, even if Mitt Romney were to defeat Obama and become the next president, it doesn’t follow that the Mormon church would run the country. The reason for that is that isn’t how our government is structured, so a religious take over would 1) be unconstitutional, and 2) he would face a mass rebellion in his own party which is mostly not Mormon meaning it would be political suicide.
Long story short: A Mormon in the white house is nothing to worry about by itself. And this is coming from someone who also believes the Mormon church is a “cult.”
Just my two cents.
