Seer Stones for Righteous
Millennial Star, No. 8, Vol. 26, February 27, 1864, pg 118-119; “27 I met with the twelve at brother Joseph’s. He conversed with us in a familiar manner on a variety of subjects, and explained to us the Urim and Thummim which he found with the plates, called in the Book of Mormon the Interpreters. He said that every man who lived on the earth was entitled to a seer stone, and should have one, but they are kept from them in consequence of their wickedness and most of those who do find one make an evil use of it; he showed us his seer stone.” – Brigham Young
2 Thess. 2:9-11; “Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders, 10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved. 11 And for this cause God shall send them strong delusion, that they should believe a lie.”
Joseph Smith and Brigham Young contradicted themselves so much it could make your head swim. If mankind was kept from having their own seer stones, aka Urim and Thummim, because of unrighteousness then why is it only the prophet of the Church can receive direct revelations from God? See D&C 43:2-7.
Now the Mormon will tell you they’re all entitled to revelation from the Lord, but you’re also deemed an apostate if you receive a revelation from God telling you that something’s amiss in Church leadership – so which is it? Is that too much of a revelation?
Furthermore, if a regular ol’ member of the Church today went to his bishop and shared that he was using seer stones or Urim and Thummim to receive directions from God, he’d be told this is impossible because they were taken back to heaven with the gold plates. Doctrines of Salvation 3:222-226.
The Church also says they have no record of any seer stones after Joseph Smith, but that contradicts earlier testimony from the prophet Wilford Woodruff who said they were dedicated on the altar at the Manti Temple and is now in possession of the Church.
Comprehensive History of the Church 6:230; “DEDICATION OF THE SEER STONE ON THE ALTAR OF THE MANTI TEMPLE One item mentioned by President Woodruff about the private dedicatory services at Manti is of more than passing interest.”Before leaving,” he writes, “I consecrated upon the altar the Seer Stone that Joseph Smith found by revelation some thirty feet under the earth (ground), and carried by him through life.” This is the very Seer Stone that the Prophet Joseph Smith used part of the time when translating the Book of Mormon; the one he took from the well he was digging with his brother Hyrum, near Palmyra, for Mr. Clark Chase, and which he was falsely accused of taking from the children of Mr. Chase, spoken of in chapter x of this work.” – Wilford Woodruff
Also see footnote 2 below for this section;
“2. See Woodruff’s Journal from 13th of May to the 19th which gives an account of the journey to Manti—of the private dedication and the return journey to Salt Lake City. See also Tucker’s Origin, Rise and Progress of Mormonism, chapter ii; also Kennedy’s Early Days of Mormonism, ch. ii. What became of the Seer Stone immediately after this is not known. The writer knows, however, that it was in the possession of the president of the church for possession of it by him was a matter of conversation between President Joseph F. Smith and himself; and the writer has reasons for knowing that it is now in possession of the church—this year of 1930.”
So this still leaves us in a quandary. How does a Mormon today receive a revelation from God without listening to his emotions or just following along with the next new teaching of the leaders? Are they unrighteous because they don’t have their own seer stones?
