D&C 89:2, 5-9, 21; “To be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days—
5 That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.
6 And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.
7 And, again, strong drinks are not for the belly, but for the washing of your bodies.
8 And again, tobacco is not for the body, neither for the belly, and is not good for man, but is an herb for bruises and all sick cattle, to be used with judgment and skill.
9 And again, hot drinks are not for the body or belly.
21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.”
Journal of Discourses 12:28; “If a person is weary, worn out, cast down, fainting, or dying, a brandy sling, a little wine, or a cup of tea is good to revive them. Do not throw these things away, and say they must never be used; they are good to be used with judgment, prudence, and discretion. Ask our Bishops if they drink tea every day, and in most cases they will tell you they do if they can get it.” – Brigham Young, Salt Lake City, April 7, 1867
Colossians 2:16; “Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holyday, or of the new moon, or of the Sabbath days.”
Doctrine and Covenants 89 was written in 1833. Brigham Young delivered his little speech in 1867 and we see how he’s contradicted what Smith told members to do.
Then we have D&C 89:2 which told members this wasn’t by commandment but in verse 21 it says if they obey the rules the angel of death will pass them by – sounds like a commandment to me! This is a false prophecy all on its own. The angel of death passes over every single human being that’s ever lived. Man is not eternal.
And we’ve saved the best for last in this example – the Lord! Paul was warning new Christians not to fall victim to all the Judaizers who had beset themselves with a list of rules while trying to live in the age of grace.
Confusing and gobledegook rules…
