Callings in the Church
Alma 29:6; “Now, seeing that I know these things, why should I desire more than to perform the work to which I have been called?”
Galatians 3:1-3; “O foolish Galatians, who hath bewitched you, that ye should not obey the truth, before whose eyes Jesus Christ hath been evidently set forth, crucified among you? 2 This only would I learn of you, Received ye the Spirit by the works of the law, or by the hearing of faith? 3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?”
Whenever we’re asked to do something in our churches of course the first thing we must do is pray. No question about that!
The problem here is who’s calling you? Is it the bishop when your phone rings telling you there’s an opening he “feels” God told him to call you to fill? Or was the calling from your Stake President to fill the shoes of someone who just left his post?
As Christians our calling is from the Lord directly – no middleman is needed with God! Remember, the veil was ripped in two when Jesus died, giving us direct access to Him. There might be times when someone in your church will put out a bulletin stating the needs of that ministry or maybe a pastor or other ministry person might call you to see if you’d be interested in helping out.
But the Lord is the One that does the calling. He imprints your heart. You already have your likes and dislikes with the personality type you are and the Lord works with that! He might stretch you in some ways, but He’s not going to have someone do cold calls like a salesman would looking to meet the monthly total.
When you get saved you go to the church to fill the need. You go with the talents God has supplied you with and you give that to Him through serving.
The Mormon Church has things all backwards. They do this in order to control members and keep them busy. If you’re busy with the needs of the Church it ensures you’ll be too busy to spend time in the Bible learning more about Him.
Oh WOW ..I recently was listening to a podcast and the ex-LDS gal said she was told her calling was to play the piano at church… here’s the kicker, she doesn’t play the piano or read music. So she sighed up for lessons and bought a keyboard. The bishop found out and asked her why she accepted…she said she was always taught never to turn down a calling.😔

That’s very typical in the Church and VERY sad. 🙁 My mother did things like that all the time. It’s heartbreaking to hear/see the control they have over people.
