Parley P. Pratt’s Lie
Millennial Star, August 1842, No. 4, Vol 3, pg. 74; “But, for the information of those who may be assailed by those foolish tales about the two wives, we would say that no such principle ever existed among the Latter-day Saints, and never will; this is well known to all who are acquainted with our books and actions, the Book of Mormon, Doctrine and Covenants; and also all our periodicals are very strict and explicit on that subject, indeed far more so than the bible.” – Published by Parley Pratt and T. Wood
2 Thessalonians 1:7-9; “And to you who are troubled rest with us, when the Lord Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with his mighty angels, 8 In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: 9 Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power.”
From what this man said, people like my grandparents acted in disobedience to the Church. I often wonder about comments like these…my polygamous grandparents who were married in March 1904 were indeed married in the Salt Lake Temple. Wives #4 & 5 were sealed to my grandfather in front of the other wives and with the approval of the Church.
Years ago I wanted to believe they wouldn’t have condoned the lies told like this one today, but as time marches on my heart has accepted the fact that they too were part of the problem and had to have lied as well.
All of us – even today – have to come to our own moment in time when we’ll side with the Lord or live in the confines of our comfortable sin. May you as the Christian remember what Jesus did for you and hold it dear in your heart at the crossroads of standing up or giving in.
