Where’s the Proof of an Apostasy?
1 Nephi 13:26; “And after they go forth by the hand of the twelve apostles of the Lamb, from the Jews unto the Gentiles, thou seest the formation of that great and abominable church, which is most abominable above all other churches; for behold, they have taken away from the gospel of the Lamb many parts which are plain and most precious; and also many covenants of the Lord have they taken away.”
Matthew 24:10-11, 35; “And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. 11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. 35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.”
In this passage of the Bible the disciples had asked Jesus when the end would come. After telling them it’s not for them to know the dates or times, they asked Him if there would be a sign of the end.
Jesus responded with the discourse we’ve all read about in Matthew chapter 24. He gave a handful of examples to watch out for and one of those was to watch for the false prophets. Notice it’s plural. He went on to tell them that neither miracles nor multitudes prove the existence of a “true church”, but it’s composed of those who follow Him exclusively.
Then near the end of His instruction He reassures the new group of leaders to stay secure in their faith because His word (scriptures) weren’t going anywhere. They would last beyond the time that earth will be in existence. His words here certainly would have reminded them of what Isaiah 54:10 said;
“For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the LORD that hath mercy on thee.”
With the words of Jesus established let’s look at what the Mormon scriptures have to say.
What plain and precious things are missing?
Where is the proof of a complete apostasy?
What scriptures were taken away from the gospel? Be specific.
If they had to do with the tribe of Nephi why aren’t there any other historical proofs of their existence either in scripture or outside of it?
How do we know what they said or if they even existed?
If someone was going to go about destroying God’s word why would it only be the “scriptures” that had to do with Nephi and company and where did they go, what happened, who did it, when did it happen, why did they do this and how?
The non-existence of anyone called the “Nephites” holds more proof the apostasy didn’t happen than there is proof of a complete apostasy of all Christians.
