New Era, April 1971, “People on Other Worlds?”; “We are of the race of Gods. We are of his species. God looks like us. We look like him. He has two arms, two legs, a head—indeed, Jesus said, “If ye have seen me, ye have seen the Father.” Obviously, God’s sons and daughters would be of his species, would resemble him. This was one of the basic truths Joseph Smith knew after his vision in 1820. Consequently, people on other worlds would be like us, because we are all his children.”
Matthew 15:13-14; “…Every plant, which my heavenly Father hath not planted, shall be rooted up. Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.”
Jesus’ words are so picturesque aren’t they? The Pharisees were stewing over the Lord’s assessment to their self-induced righteousness of traditions, and He used the experience as an example for the disciples of what can happen when we adopt a herd mentality. He just moved on to the next subject at hand without skipping a beat. It’s beautiful!
Sadly the Mormon people are much like the Pharisees of Jesus’ day. No one questions why they’re doing what they’re doing. No one digs deeper into His word to search for truth. They blindly follow the leader and as Jesus pointed out, the results of such behavior are disastrous.
If you were around in the late sixties/early seventies, it was a fast paced, ever changing and exciting time in history. We watched as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the moon and also heard of the possibility there were others watching us outside our own galaxy. UFO’s were all the rage and just as popular of a subject as the Apollo 11.
I recall sitting in the backyard for hours after sunset and waiting for the chance to see if one would skirt the skies of northern Utah. Thoughts of other worlds with people like us filled the imaginations of thousands while Church leaders filled the minds of their followers that indeed, other gods and other worlds existed outside the galaxy we resided in.
But are they real? Is the possibility of other gods dotting the skies of eternity a reality or just the blasphemous teachings of Joseph Smith and company? According to the God of the Bible it’s not only a fallacy, but indeed idolatry to believe such a thing and yet the Mormon people chose to do so anyway.
That herd mentality was alive and well with this ideology and it still is today.
