To say that I’m appalled because of an article I read in the Salt Lake Trib would be an understatement. You’ll take note that I didn’t say surprised.
According to this report the Church openly read a letter to their congregations in Hawaii urging them to call their legislatures in protest against the new gay marriage bill coming up for a vote in their state.
I just want to make it public as if it never was before (cough, cough), they’re doing 
this while they have their non-profit status number intact – aka 501C3. And as one of our regular posters has pointed out many times before…why don’t they publish their financial records?
Well for someone like Life After Ministries this is quite disturbing to say the least. Let me explain why.
When Mr. Romney ran for the presidency in his first go-round in 2008 we had been vigorously fighting for our 501C3 for more than three years. From the time LAM went public in 2004 and every single week for years we jumped through every hoop the IRS in Cincinnati told us we had to jump through in order to get the coveted status so we could send our donors a tax receipt.
I even tried making a personal plea to a cousin of mine who works at the IRS in Ogden, Utah, alas my plight fell on deaf ears.
After awhile it just got too expensive for us personally to keep fighting the stupid thing so we withdrew our request. They kept telling us we couldn’t have articles on the site about Romney so I removed those. Then I couldn’t have articles about the Church calling Christians the whore of Babylon and I refused to remove that.
Then I had them tell me I couldn’t tell people they should leave the Church; on and on it went. Every week they’d call and give me another laundry list of things to remove from the site.
We were convinced then and now that Mormons were in charge of our case. And while, yes, we paid attention to the IRS’ problems recently and thought about filing a complaint, we’re still undecided.
I just find this interesting on a couple of fronts.
1. How do they keep their non-prof status and preach this from their pulpit? Isn’t this a political issue?
2. Why aren’t they fighting like they did on the Prop 8 issue? That seems ambiguous. Maybe the tourist dollars they rake in at the cultural center in Oahu isn’t worth losing…?
3. Maybe, just maybe there’s another issue lurking behind the prophet’s doors in Salt Lake? As we saw earlier this week they’re making some pretty bold moves towards the gay issue lately so perhaps this is just another part of a new agenda.
4. Why are they saying one thing behind closed doors and hosting large public events in another state with a different message?
