Missionary Obligations
Church News, October 9, 1983; “Every young man should serve a mission. It is not an option; it is your obligation.” – Spencer W. Kimball
Matthew 28:18-20; “And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. 19 ¶ Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: 20 Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
Mormon children are raised from birth up to prepare their hearts to go on a mission when they turn 18 years old. They begin singing songs in their early Primary classes like “I hope they call me on a mission when I have grown a foot or two…”
As a young Mormon child I don’t recall ever singing a song of thanks to God for sacrificing His Son on the cross at Calvary for my ugly sins or that I as a sinner needed to depend upon Jesus for my salvation.
The children of Mormonism are taught to look forward with eagerness to the day they’ll receive a much coveted letter with the orders of where they’ll be sent to share the Mormon gospel. Their predicament reminds me of the hollow promises that if you just endure to the end and fulfill all the commandments of the Mormon gospel law you have a chance at Mormon godhood at some point.
Praise God my thoughts today are upon words from true Christian missionaries like Amy Carmichael –
“If I covet any place but the dust at the foot of the Cross, I know nothing of Calvary Love”.
If we don’t know about the events that took place at Calvary or the true reason why it happened, we’ll have nothing to share with anyone when we obey the Great Commission.
