History of the Church 5:307; “About noon, I lay down on the writing table, with my head on a pile of law books, saying, “Write and tell the world I acknowledge myself a very great lawyer; I am going to study law, and this is the way I study it;” and then fell asleep”. – Joseph Smith, May 18, 1842
Deuteronomy 18:10-12; “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch, 11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer. 12 For all that do these things are an abomination unto the LORD: and because of these abominations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee.”
We talked about this experience of Smith’s a couple of years ago (Joseph Smith Chronology, p 185), but I’m bringing it up again to remind people of Smith’s personality. The first time I saw this I just about fell out of my chair. If I thought he had been joking it would kind of be funny, but I’ve no doubt Smith was trying to pull one over on the unsuspecting.
My thoughts go between total shock to despair. I can’t help but think of my mother and millions of others who are totally sold out to Smith’s prophetic calling. The amount of people we’ve helped recently in exiting Mormonism is astounding and our example today is just one of the reasons why they’re leaving.
As I mentioned the last time we touched on this, if his method of getting smart was true then I’ve hit the jackpot! One of the major problems with my MS is fatigue, so I’m thinking that I could just lay my head on all the books I can get my hands on and be brilliant by the end of the week.
While that sounds funny, the truth is anything but. How incredibly sad it is they flout this as acceptable literature for their adherents and no one questions this guy!
God made it perfectly clear in Deuteronomy. No one who participates in magic will be found worthy of God. Additionally, no one who is arrogant or boastful will be accepted by Him either. Joseph struck out in both categories with this one flagrant comment. What are the odds?
Pray that Mormons will see through the veneer to accept in their heart Smith was an untrustworthy prophet. Also pray they know and understand that God is waiting for them with open arms to love on them!
