History of the Church 6:73, 78; “Letter to James Arlington Bennett, Nauvoo, Illinois, November 13, 1843…I combat the errors of ages; I meet the violence of mobs; I cope with illegal proceedings from executive authority; I cut the Gordian knot of powers, and I solve mathematical problems of universities, with truth— diamond truth; and God is my “right hand man.”” (more…)

History of the Church 5:392; “Paul saw the third heavens, and I more.” — Joseph Smith
General Conference, “The Doctrine of Christ,” Apr 2012; “At the same time it should be remembered that not every statement made by a Church leader, past or present, necessarily constitutes doctrine. It is commonly understood in the Church that a statement made by one leader on a single occasion often represents a personal, though well-considered, opinion, not meant to be official or binding for the whole Church.” — Elder D. Todd Christofferson

Joseph Smith Knows More than Anyone
History of the Church 5:467; “…before I will bear this unhallowed persecution any longer—before I will be dragged away again among my enemies for trial, I will spill the last drop of blood in my veins, and will see all my enemies in hell! To bear it any longer would be a sin, and I will not bear it any longer. Shall we bear it any longer? [One universal “No!” ran through all the vast assembly, like a loud peal of thunder.]

Joe Smith’s Arrogance & Influence
Journal of Discourses 2:165; “I have no doubt but I shall be discharged by the Municipal Court: were I before any good tribunal I should be discharged, as the Missouri writs are illegal, and good for nothing—they are “without form and void.”
But before I will bear this unhallowed persecution any longer—before I will be dragged away again, among my enemies for trial, I will spill the last drop of blood in my veins, and will see all my enemies IN HELL! To bear it any longer would be a sin, and I will not bear it any longer. Shall we bear it any longer? [One universal “No!” ran through all the vast assembly, like a loud peal of thunder.] I wish the lawyer who says we have no powers in Nauvoo may be choked to death with his own words. Don’t employ lawyers, or pay them money for their knowledge, for I have learnt they don’t know anything. I know more than they all.”
1 Samuel 2:3; “Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.”

Arrogance of Joseph Smith
History of the Church 6:408-409; “Come on! ye prosecutors! ye false swearers! All hell, boil over! Ye burning mountains, roll down your lava! for I will come out on the top at last. I have more to boast of than ever any man had. I am the only man that has ever been able to keep a whole church together since the days of Adam. A large majority of the whole have stood by me. Neither Paul, John, Peter, nor Jesus ever did it. I boast that no man ever did such a work as I. The followers of Jesus ran away from Him; but the Latter-day Saints never ran away from me yet.”

Defending Joseph Smith
Thinking back to all the years I was totally devoted to Joseph Smith and then to the years I began questioning reminded me of how ambiguous I was before I accepted the truth. Leaving Mormonism isn’t easy for anyone.
Many times jobs, homes and families are lost or ripped apart when we follow Jesus exclusively, but the rewards far outweigh the temporal losses and are minute in comparison to what we’ve gained not only eternally, but for the here and now.
