nauvoo-temple-burningRegardless of which side you’re on in the Joseph Smith saga, historical facts can’t change the outcome of the wake he left behind.

Nauvoo, Illinois laid in shambles as the Saints departed for the Rocky Mountains. Gone was the illustrious ideal of a Mormon utopia, and in its stead was a pile of burning embers from what used to be their beloved temple. That was until a tornado came through the valley, sweeping away any salvageable remnants or visible reminders of the town’s history.

Mormon Decisions 10THE DAILY TRIBUNE: SALT LAKE CITY, TUESDAY, JULY 3, 1887;

“THE MORMONS IN NAUVOO – Three Letters from William Law on Mormonism.

I saw nothing wrong until after the city charter was obtained. A change was soon apparent; the laws of the country were set at defiance and although outwardly everything was smooth, the under current was most vile and obnoxious. Time revealed to me and to many others much that we had not even suspected. We were kept in the dark as long as possible and held up before the public as examples of the Mormon people. Well, you know what followed.

Joseph Smith 8January 1, 1841

A new bankruptcy law goes into effect on January 1, 1841 allowing private citizens to file for solvency with the exception that properties could not be transferred to others to avoid paying debts owed. Before this time only corporations were afforded the ability to declare bankruptcy.

Joseph Young

April 7, 1797 – July 16, 1881

Early Mormon PolygamistsThis man’s life is another example of how Mormons view themselves as a people group. Both he and they are somehow oblivious to the outside world and most importantly God’s word.

There are many instances in historical records where Joseph Young is affectionately referred to as “Uncle John” because of his kind and nurturing demeanor. They repeatedly note he wouldn’t harm a fly and known for being kind to everyone.  The problem of course is that being nice doesn’t get you into heaven!

Edward Stevenson

May 1, 1820 – January 27, 1897

Early Mormon PolygamistsUntil a month or so ago I had never heard of Edward Stevenson.  I obviously knew about the MTC (Missionary Training Center), but had no idea one of the buildings on BYU’s campus was named in his honor or what significance this man’s name surely holds for everyone whose shadow has crossed the doorway.

Joseph’s Lie about Polygamy

salt lake mormon temple 2Joseph Smith preached a sermon in Nauvoo on May 26, 1844 denying polygamy –

History of the Church 6:410-411; “[William Law] has gone to Carthage and swore that I had told him that I was guilty of adultery. This spiritual wifeism! Why, a man dares not speak or wink, for fear of being accused of this….A man asked me whether the commandment was given that a man may have seven wives; and now [William Law] has charged me with adultery….I am innocent of all these charges, and you can bear witness of my innocence, for you know me yourselves…What a thing it is for a man to be accused of committing adultery, and having seven wives, when I can only find one. I am the same man, and as innocent as I was fourteen years ago; and I can prove them all perjurers.”

Joe Smith’s Arrogance & Influence

Mormon Decisions 10Journal of Discourses 2:165; “I have no doubt but I shall be discharged by the Municipal Court: were I before any good tribunal I should be discharged, as the Missouri writs are illegal, and good for nothing—they are “without form and void.”

But before I will bear this unhallowed persecution any longer—before I will be dragged away again, among my enemies for trial, I will spill the last drop of blood in my veins, and will see all my enemies IN HELL! To bear it any longer would be a sin, and I will not bear it any longer. Shall we bear it any longer? [One universal “No!” ran through all the vast assembly, like a loud peal of thunder.] I wish the lawyer who says we have no powers in Nauvoo may be choked to death with his own words. Don’t employ lawyers, or pay them money for their knowledge, for I have learnt they don’t know anything. I know more than they all.”

1 Samuel 2:3; “Talk no more so exceeding proudly; let not arrogancy come out of your mouth: for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.”

Rising Generation Won’t Die till Christ Returns

History of the Church 5:336-337; “Then read the 14th chapter of Revelation, 6th and 7th verses—”And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, saying with a loud voice, Fear God and give glory to Him, for the hour of His judgment is come.” And Hosea, 6th chapter, After two days, etc.,—2,520 years; which brings it to 1890. The coming of the Son of Man never will be—never can be till the judgments spoken of for this hour are poured out: which judgments are commenced. Paul says, “Ye are the children of the light, and not of the darkness, that that day should overtake you as a thief in the night.” It is not the design of the Almighty to come upon the earth and crush it and grind it to powder, but he will reveal it to His servants the prophets.”

For the next few days we’re going to be looking at the markings on the Nauvoo and Salt Lake Temples. Now that summer is just about over, this means the pageants at the temples are over with as well.

Our prayers for this is that the Mormons who visited the pageants would think about the markings on the Nauvoo Temple and if they visited SLC this summer to think upon the occultic markings on the Salt Lake Temple.

We’re taking a look at the sequence of events that took place in Nauvoo, Illinois in 1842.

History of the Church, 4:552;Wednesday, March 16.—I was with the Masonic Lodge and rose to the sublime degree.

James 5:12; But above all things, my brethren, swear not, neither by heaven, neither by the earth, neither by any other oath: but let your yea be yea; and your nay, nay; lest ye fall into condemnation.

This took place on March 16, 1842.

Polygamy and Mormon Church Leaders Overview

Nauvoo Roots of Mormon Polygamy 1841-1846; A Preliminary Demographic Report, George D. Smith, pg. 32; “Over the six years when polygamy was practiced in Nauvoo, 1841 to 1846, Smith, Kimball, and Young were the most-married men in Nauvoo; they accounted, in fact, for 117 of the 434 Nauvoo polygamous marriages, over one-fourth of the marriages by the community of 153 polygamous husbands. After Nauvoo, Young married fifteen more wives and Kimball married eight. At the funeral of his wife, Vilate, Kimball, pointing to the coffin, said:  “There lies a woman who has given me forty-four wives.”

Islam vs Mormonism

 by Kirk Grim

The Islamic faith is centered on the belief in one God and in Arabic he is called Allah. The Muslims, followers of Islam, believe that Muhammad was visited by an angel of light from whom he received God’s final revelation. Muhammad claimed that this angel of light was Gabriel, the same Gabriel as the one from the Old Testament of the Bible. It was several years before these visions were recorded in what is called the Quran, the sacred scripture of Islam.

November 20 – Hebrews 11:36-38; “And others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment: They were stoned, they were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword: they wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented; (Of whom the world was not worthy:) they wandered in deserts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.”

The above scriptures are a classic example of what it means to be a martyr.  It means that you don’t fight back; you don’t have the mentality of “kill or be killed”.  You die willingly for the sake of the gospel.   Notice how Joseph and Hyrum Smith died and see if they qualify.

I’ve had people in the LDS Church tell me that Joseph died for the Mormon people and my question is always the same.  What did Joseph’s death personally do for you?

_____

“I shall never forget the deep feeling of sympathy and regard manifested in the countenance of Brother Joseph as he drew nigh to Hyrum, and, leaning over him, exclaimed, ‘Oh! my poor, dear brother Hyrum!’ He, however, instantly arose, and with a firm, quick step, and a determined expression of countenance, approached the door, and pulling the six-shooter left by Brother Wheelock from his pocket, opened the door slightly, and snapped the pistol six successive times; only three of the barrels, however, were discharged. I afterwards understood that two or three were wounded by these discharges, two of whom, I am informed, died.”  Joseph Smith, History of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 7: 102 – 103.  The 3rd President of the Church, John Taylor made the above statements.
