Women of Mormondom, pp 78-79; “Jehovah is a covenant maker. ‘And I will make with Israel a new and everlasting covenant,’ is the text that Joseph and Brigham have been working upon. Hence this temple building in America to fulfill and glorify the new covenant of Israel…
…the Mormons build not temples to the name of Jesus, but to the name of Jehovah – not to the Son, but to the Father.
The Hebrew symbol is not the cross, but the scepter. The Hebrews know nothing of the cross. It is the symbol of heathenism, when Rome received her signs and her worship…The reign of Messiah! Temples to the Most High God! The scepter, not the cross!” – Eliza Roxcy Snow
Jeremiah 31:31-33; “Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah: 32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD: 33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.”
I had a hard time choosing a title for this dilemma because of how many heretical things Ms. Snow had to say in her book, Women of Mormondom. With that in mind let’s take a look at what we have here today!
1.First of all, Brigham and Joseph don’t have any role in the new and everlasting covenant outside of accepting God’s mercy.
2.If you’re building a temple and you’re calling yourself a Christian why would that temple be built upon the name of Jesus, especially when that’s the name of your church?!
3.The building of temples won’t ever fulfill or glorify the new covenant. The new covenant as seen in our biblical example above is fulfilled by God writing His law on the heart of man.
4.How did Ms. Snow justify her statement they only build temples to Jehovah and not Jesus? In Mormonism, Jesus’ name in the OT is Jehovah!
Encyclopedia of Mormonism, pg 741; “JEHOVAH. Latter-day Saints believe that Jesus was Jehovah himself, God of Israel, not son of Jehovah.”
5.Ms. Snow said the Hebrew symbol isn’t the cross, but the scepter and went on to imply the scepter is seen in the presence of Mormon temples. First of all, Mormon temples are a new phenomenon not known to the Hebrew people from the biblical era. Secondly, the words of Paul in 1 Cor 1:18 should have quieted this woman’s thoughts!
“For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God.”
At the end of the day we can see how misguided this woman was. As an FYI in case you’re unaware, this was the widow of Joseph Smith as well as Brigham Young.
