The New Mormon History, “The Metamorphosis of the Kingdom of God,” p 227; “To Brigham Young the expedition meant something else. He announced publicly that perhaps the Lord was about to cut the thread between the kingdom of God and the United States. Privately he wrote to Thomas L. Kane “that the time is not far distant when Utah shall be able to assume her rights and place among the family of nations.” – D Michael Quinn, Editor
Deuteronomy 13:1-3; “If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, 2 And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; 3 Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.”
It’s been 156 years and to date (2014) Utah still isn’t a sovereign nation, nor does it look as if it will be anytime soon!
Brigham obviously uttered a false prophecy and when this happens God gives us explicit orders not to accept his testimony and disregard everything else he has to say.
The book listed above (The New Mormon History) is a compilation of letters and essays written by various historians. The quote by Brigham Young was taken from a letter he wrote to Thomas Kane in 1858 and quoted in an essay ‘The Metamorphosis of the Kingdom of God’.
