Sermons and Writings of Bruce R. McConkie 337; “We ought to judge everything by gospel standards, not the reverse. Do not take a scientific principle, so-called, and try to make the gospel conform to it. Take the gospel for what it is, and, insofar as you can, make other things conform to it, and if they do not conform to it, forget them. Forget them; do not worry. They will vanish away eventually. In the true sense of the word, the gospel embraces all truth. And everything that is true is going to conform to the principles that God has revealed.” – Bruce R. McConkie
2 Timothy 3:16; “All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.”
Gospel standards. Just what is a ‘gospel standard’?
The answer to my self-imposed question is of course the Bible! God tells us it’s good for reproof, correction and training in righteousness as it says in our scripture today. It gives us the guidelines for practical application to our everyday lives and it’s sure to outlast all of us as God promised us in Isaiah 40:8.
Sadly, LDS leaders project their scare tactics onto its members with silly statements like the one Mr. McConkie made here in hopes that no one will think outside their windowless box of false teachings.
The comment that nonconforming science will eventually go away is actually a lie. The belief in evolution is stronger than ever and it’s been around since Darwin introduced that garbage back in 1859.
Finally, his statement that the gospel embraces all truth is also a lie. The gospel in the sense of it being the good news of salvation that Jesus preached isn’t all inclusive. John 14:6
The gospel, meaning the Bible as a whole, is the story of God’s redemptive power and interaction with mankind throughout history. In it we read how God created everything, established rules, provided salvation and the trouble man kept encountering when they disobeyed. Today we use His word as our guidebook for everything in life. And most importantly in this gospel that we call the Bible, we read numerous times that you’re not to add to or detract from its contents.
