Journal of Discourses 1:123; “Remember that God, our heavenly Father, was perhaps once a child, and mortal like we ourselves, and rose step by step in the scale of progress, in the school of advancement; has moved forward and overcome, until He has arrived at the point where He now is.” – Orson Hyde, Salt Lake City, October 6, 1853
2 Peter 2:1-2; “But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction. 2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.”
The operative word in this whole Mormon teaching is ‘perhaps’.
Once you hear a teacher/pastor surmising as this man did when referring to the nature of God, that’s your cue to stand up and walk out straightaway!
The Bible never teaches us that God was once a child like us, nor does it teach us that we’ll become gods like this teaching intimates.
By using the word ‘perhaps’ Mr. Hyde has essentially told them and us that he had no clue as to who God was. The more his lips moved the more lies spilled into the ears of those listening.
