D&C 121:8, 10-12, 14-15; “And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes. 10 Thou art not yet as Job; thy friends do not contend against thee, neither charge thee with transgression, as they did Job. 11 And they who do charge thee with transgression, their hope shall be blasted, and their prospects shall melt away as the hoar frost melteth before the burning rays of the rising sun; 12 And also that God hath set his hand and seal to change the times and seasons, and to blind their minds, that they may not understand his marvelous workings; that he may prove them also and take them in their own craftiness; 14 That they may be disappointed also, and their hopes may be cut off; 15 And not many years hence, that they and their posterity shall be swept from under heaven, saith God, that not one of them is left to stand by the wall.” – March 20, 1839
James 1:15; “Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.”
This part of D&C 121 is known as the ‘prophecies and prayers’ of Joseph Smith that he claims God gave to him to prophesy while incarcerated at the jail in Liberty, Missouri.
As you can see his god promised him that he’d be avenged, that he’d triumph over all his enemies, the times and seasons would change, the enemy’s minds would become blind, and their hopes would be cut off.
The Mormon god also promised the prosperity of the enemy will be swept from under heaven and there ‘wouldn’t be anyone left to stand by the wall’ – whatever that means.
Last we heard, Missouri is still inhabited and it looks as if the enemy triumphed over Smith when an enemy gunned him down in another jail he was incarcerated at in Carthage, IL.
This prophesying and empty promises of God avenging these people is quite sad. Think about the amount of time they surely spent praying up a storm and expecting to see God to come through for them. The opposite results always took place for these people. They were run out of New York, Ohio, Missouri and Illinois. What knowledge has been poured forth on Mormons that others aren’t privy to?
It’s not hard to understand how their hearts could harden towards outsiders and their personal relationship with the Lord growing more and more distant. Their motto of ‘self-sufficiency’ they’ve since adopted had a wide-open door to walk right through and into their hearts, taking hold in a death grip.
So who’s at fault here?
Two of the questions I’m asked a lot is ‘how did Mormonism happen’ or ‘how did it get this way without anyone saying something’.
Well, the first person I see that’s complicit in this whole thing is Joe Smith and then his cohorts. Corporately and individually all Mormons have to take responsibility; however, I believe LDS teachings like this sheds light on how Mormonism ‘happened’.
Why so many people believed him? I offer James 1:15, our scripture verse for the day. It’s hard for humans to admit when they’re wrong or to act on when they should cut their losses and move on. Pride is ever present…
