Gospel Through the Ages, p 107; “ In the words of Dr. John A. Widtsoe, “God and man are of the same race, differing only in their degrees of advancement.” Additional light is thrown on the subject by Charles W. Penrose:
“To know God we must know ourselves. All the personal attributes which are ascribed to God by inspired men, we find in ourselves. . . . Mormonism does not tend to debase God to the level of man, but to exalt man to the perfection of God.”” – Milton Hunter
1 Chronicles 17:20; “O LORD, there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears.”
When the Bible tells us God made man in His image what goes through your mind?
Today we want to take a look at the conditions of what this means so we can give a proper answer to those with whom we’re speaking.
God said He made us in His image which refers to the mentality of mankind being a rational, volitional person enabled to choose right from wrong. God has given us the intellect and ability to reason, enjoy the scenery around us, etc. Dr. Anthony Hoekstra said ‘the vestige of this is when we recoil from evil, paint a picture, name a dog…’ It’s pointing back to God creating us in His perfect holiness. Gen. 1:31
Mankind was created to be a reflection of God who is morally pure. A good example of this is Adam and Eve’s reaction of hiding from God because of their sin. Gen. 3:7-8
Mankind was created to be in a relationship with God – 1 Cor. 1:9; mankind was created for God’s glory Isaiah 43:7; and for us to do good works Eph. 2:10.
We weren’t just another piece of eternally existing immaterial matter intended to be recycled on another sphere and become a god as LDS doctrines would have people believe. Our spirits are immaterial matter, but they were created, which by default means that we had a beginning.
