Journal of Discourses 20:99; “Polygamy is a principle revealed from heaven with a commandment to enter into it practically. The principle is abundantly corroborated in the ancient scriptures, approved of God and sanctioned by all righteous men; and he who labors to overthrow this principle, fights against Jehovah and makes himself a shining target, courting the arrows of the Almighty upon his head, heart and country. – Orson Hyde, Salt Lake City, November 3, 1878
Romans 13:1-2; “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.”
There are four lies in the speech Mr. Hyde delivered.
The good Lord never commanded mankind to practice polygamy. He allowed it, but He never commanded it. He advised men not to multiply wives to themselves because doing so can turn their hearts away from Him – Deuteronomy 17:17.
Let’s take a quick look at those lies –
1.Mr. Hyde lied about polygamy being a righteous principle
2.He lied about the scriptures. What Mormons did was not, and still isn’t, corroborated anywhere in the Bible.
3.He lied by saying this was a commandment of God
4.Mr. Hyde disobeyed those in authority and in so doing, lied to the Mormon people by not being a good example as a servant of God
