Mormon 8:24; “And he knoweth their prayers, that they were in behalf of
their brethren. And he knoweth their faith, for in his name could they remove mountains; and in his name could they cause the earth to shake; and by the power of his word did they cause prisons to tumble to the earth; yea, even the fiery furnace could not harm them, neither wild beasts nor poisonous serpents, because of the power of his word.”
Romans 13:1-2; “Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. 2 Whosoever therefore resisteth the power, resisteth the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation.”
The verse from today’s Mormon canon brings up a few questions for us, so let’s take a look!
1.Why did Joseph Smith spend so much time in jail? The Mormon verse above says having enough faith will cause prison walls to tumble.
2.Why didn’t the prison walls tumble?
Smith was in jail in Missouri, Illinois, New York, and Ohio; basically, every state he lived in during his short 39 years of life. There’s no report of any prison walls tumbling at any of those jails.
3.Why was Joseph Smith in jail so often? The government doesn’t arbitrarily go on the hunt looking for people to throw in jail. What was going on in this man’s life to warrant his multiple incarcerations?
4.Is this the way a prophet of God behaves?
