A few days ago, we looked at Contradictions in the Book of Mormon. Today we’re looking at the talk Dale Renlund gave at General Conference, which is where we pulled our references from.
For the sake of brevity, we’ve pulled just a few of his comments to compare with what God says in His word. To read Mr. Renlund’s talk in full, see General Conference, ‘Do Justly, Love Mercy, and Walk Humbly with God’, October 2020.
As the title of his talk suggests, the focus of Mr. Renlund’s talk was on how to act humbly, while doing so honorably.
The problem? His talk focused on how members should do those things while working to gain Mormon salvation, (aka, godhood status), and members should ask themselves if they’ve done enough.
First of all, Paul tells us in Colossians 3:17 that when we’re saved we do things for God’s glory because we belong to Him. Our behavior is a reflection of what’s already going on inside of us.
“And whatsoever ye do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God and the Father by him.”
Furthermore, our life is hidden in Christ, and we do things externally because of what’s taken place internally, which is our faith in Jesus. Colossians 2:18.
Here are a few of the things Mr. Renlund said, followed by our comments –
“Without the blessings that come from Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ, we can never do enough or be enough by ourselves. The good news, though, is that because of and through Jesus Christ we can become enough.”
This is where we used his references in our article the other day. He claimed the Mormon god never changes (Alma 41:8), and men are made perfect through the shed blood of Christ (Moroni 10:32-33).
If either of those things were true Mormon dogma, we wouldn’t be here looking at this.
“When we receive and use the gift of the Holy Ghost after baptism, we can enjoy the constant companionship of the Holy Ghost and be taught all things that we should do, (14) including how to walk humbly with God.”
(14) 2 Nephi 32:5 For behold, again I say unto you that if ye will enter in by the way, and receive the Holy Ghost, it will show unto you all things what ye should do.” [emp. added]
God’s Holy Spirit is not an ‘it’. An animal is an ‘it’, or an inanimate object is an ‘it’. Why would it be okay to refer to the Lord in this manner? There’s nothing in the Bible that remotely suggests such a thing. His words speak to the fact the Church doesn’t believe in the God of the Bible.
“Individuals who walk humbly with God remember what Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ have done for them. Am I doing enough? What else should I be doing? The action we take in response to these questions is central to our happiness in this life and in the eternities. The Savior does not want us to take salvation for granted.”
If Jesus shed His precious blood for us, why would someone question if they should do more? What is greater than that?
Mr. Renlund had just said because of Jesus Christ, there’s nothing more they could do. He also referenced a passage in Micah to explain we’d never measure up to what God can do. He obviously doesn’t put a lot of stock in his claim.
Micah 6:8 “He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?”
Please, pray for those who listened to this man’s talk. We’re praying for Jesus’ intervention to have Mormons stop and think about the endless contradictions this man uttered from his worldwide pulpit!
With Love in Christ;
Michelle
