Journal of Discourses 26:279 “Our organization is admitted to be without a parallel; and this through a mere boy.
But the fact is, he was not the author, neither did he ever claim its authorship; he was merely the honored instrument under God to reveal it to and institute it among men. And although the press and the pulpit unite in denouncing him as a crazy fanatic and a vile impostor, his work challenges the admiration of the best thinkers of the age.
The principles that he unfolded are in harmony with the scriptures and with reason; they are in harmony with true science and with the laws of the universe; and he has presented them clearly and distinctly so that none need misunderstand them. It is most singular that the intelligence of the 19th century can look upon this boy and mark him as being so infamous a being as they say he was, when the fruits of his labors are before the world and none can gainsay them. This is the work of the Divine Master, and Joseph Smith was His servant.” — John H. Smith, Salt Lake City, Sunday, July 27th, 1885.
Mark 10:44-45 “And whosoever of you will be the chiefest, shall be servant of all. 45 For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.”
In the Bible passage above, Jesus was on His way to Jerusalem, and walking alongside Him were the disciples. After telling them the Son of Man would soon be delivered up to death, brothers James and John made a request to sit in the prestigious spot next to Him.
Jesus quickly shot down their lofty idea by stating that as a servant it wasn’t His place to fulfill such a request. The point to His words was a lesson to understand their place in this world.
He taught them what it really meant to be a great person in this life.
Comparatively speaking, we see another scenario that unfolded 135 years ago in the Wasatch Front. The grandeur of the mountains was the unfortunate setting for Mr. Smith’s claim about his cousin, Joe Smith, Jr. Joseph Smith did author the BoM, and proudly stated as much. See Book of Mormon Authorship with images of Joe’s claim.
Other lies in this man’s talk —
‘…principles that he unfolded are in harmony with the scriptures…’
There’s not a single doctrine in Mormon theology that agrees with the Bible.
‘…they are in harmony with true science and with the laws of the universe…’
There aren’t any Quakers living on the moon. See False Prophecies of Joseph Smith.
‘…the fruits of his labors are before the world and none can gainsay them…’
The best example the fruit of Smith’s labors are wrong is the Bible. The untold numbers of Christians who’ve spoken out against this man is another.
‘This is the work of the Divine Master, and Joseph Smith was His servant.’
The examples we’ve listed above are proof enough the last claim listed is a lie as well. Smith was a servant only to Satan, not God. God is not the author of confusion which means He never lies, nor does He lead people to worship foreign gods.
The reason for bringing up this man’s talk is twofold.
1.In my pastor’s sermon the other day he pointed out how the Savior redefined the meaning of greatness. It was an awesome reminder of how the Lord was always focused on serving others, and not Himself.
2.Mr. Smith’s talk was mentioned in part by an LDS leader recently which we’ll be looking at in the next few days. They mentioned Smith’s talk to remind members Joe Smith was also born in December, and the important role he played as a ‘servant’ of the Lord.
These are the polar opposite in pointing out what, or whom, a servant is all about.
Please, continue to pray for those who are caught in the lies of this organization, and for the leaders as well.
With Love in Christ –
Michelle
