General Conference, ‘What Think Ye of Christ?’, October 1988 “Man, unquestionably has impressive powers … But after all our obedience and good works, we cannot be saved from the effects of our sins without the grace extended by the atonement of Jesus Christ … Man cannot earn his own salvation.” — Dallin Oaks [emp. added]
The Miracle of Forgiveness, p. 207 “…however powerful the saving grace of Christ, it brings exaltation to no man who does not comply with the works of the gospel.” – Spencer W. Kimball, 1969 Also see our article on Kimball’s book – No Salvation Through Pure Grace of Christ.
Galatians 2:21 “I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.”
The LDS scenario above is tragic to be sure. Although the leadership of the Church is filled with white-collar business type people, it’s hard to believe they wouldn’t see scriptures like Galatians 2:21, or Ephesians 2:8-9. That’s a microcosm of Bible verses the Lord has given to explain how we’re saved. They would have to be totally oblivious, or they’ve totally rejected God altogether.
Mr. Oaks delivered his speech three years after the death of Mr. Kimball. We’re wondering if he would’ve said the same thing if Kimball was alive.
The contradictions in Mormonism are plentiful and they’re still publishing the same type of false teachings even today.
Our main question for Mr. Oaks today is this –
If man can’t earn his own salvation, why are you teaching otherwise?
You won’t hear a conference talk that doesn’t stress members must have a valid temple recommend which in turn means you have to pay 10% of your income to enter therein.
In closing we must also ask LDS members a vitally important question.
Which of the two statements do you trust? Please know that if you’re LDS we’re praying you’ll come to have a saving knowledge of Christ Jesus and Him crucified. One thing is absolutely certain beloved…
Trying to earn your way into heaven means you’ve rejected Jesus and what He’s done for you on the cross at Calvary.
With Love in Christ —
Michelle
As an FYI, the link for Kimball’s book came from archives.org and it stated it could only be borrowed for an hour at a time.
[…] LDS Contradictions: Grace Doesn’t Save, Works Can’t Save […]
Since the Bible isn’t translated correctly according to Joe, I guess that partially explains why they get so many things wrong. Since the Bible cannot be trusted to teach truth, why is it included in their standard works? So confusing.
I’ve wondered the same thing many times. Sigh…
I have a copy of Kimball’s book which I bought in 2006 from the Deseret Book Store on-line after reading about it in a post on Mormonism Research Ministry’s site. It was a great tool when talking to Mormons while we had an outdoor book table ministry in Iowa City — I was able plant a lot of “thought provokers,” but I also got a lot of flack from those who claimed the book wasn’t doctrine.
They usually say the same type of thing when they can’t explain something. I’ve always said the MoF is on my top 5 list of worst things they’ve ever published.
So, how do they know when the prophet is off the clock? It’s so convenient when he’s on the clock because the church is constantly changing its rules and regs…..continuing revelation is a might fine mitigater.
I think he has an app now, like the Uber driver. He just taps the app when he’s a prophet. Not sure how they did it in the past…maybe they punched a time clock.
Well…whenever it’s not a convenient comment members are trained to reply that it was simply his own opinion, or that outsiders have taken something out of context.
