June 30 — Mormons Need Money for Salvation. Today we’re looking at the contradictions of Mormon teachings about paying tithes and pastors.
Mormon 8:32 “Yea, it shall come in a day when there shall be churches built up that shall say: Come unto me, and for your money you shall be forgiven of your sins.”
The Book of Mormon was published in 1830. Mormon supposedly lived circa 421 AD.
Let’s notice the sequence of events and how the LDS doctrinal revelation did a 180º turnaround by the end of the century.
D&C 119:4 “And after that, those who have thus been tithed shall pay one-tenth of all their interest annually; and this shall be a standing law unto them forever, for my holy priesthood, saith the Lord.”
That revelation/commandment was given by Joseph Smith on July 8, 1838.
Encyclopedia of Mormonism, p. 1482 “In 1881 obedience to the law of tithing became a requirement for temple attendance (JD 22:207-208) for those with an income.”
The sermon listed in the Journal of Discourses reference above was delivered by Wilford Woodruff on January 9, 1881.
This contradicts what the Book of Mormon said!
Interestingly the Church’s beginning with Smith himself was quick on its feet to judge and condemn Christian churches for all types of things. Throwing out generalized condemnations for being an organization that was only in it for the money was very common for their leaders.
The whole reason for Mormonism began with the premise that God didn’t approve of any church whatsoever in Joseph Smith’s day. That includes what Jesus did on the cross.
Romans 5:18 “Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life.”
Sadly, the average Mormon won’t consider Paul’s words that we find in the example above because they’ve also been taught the Bible has been corrupted.
Articles of Faith 1:8 “We believe the Bible to be the word of God as far as it is translated correctly; we also believe the Book of Mormon to be the word of God.”
Lastly about paying your pastor – the Bible is clear that believers should pay their pastors.
1 Timothy 5:18 “For the scripture saith, Thou shalt not muzzle the ox that treadeth out the corn. And, The labourer is worthy of his reward.”
Oh, what a tangled web they weave…
Please pray for all Mormons and ask what they think about the contradictions!
With Love in Christ —
