February 20 — Purpose of Tithing: Prove Faithfulness to Church. General Conference, ‘Tithing: An Opportunity to Prove Our Faithfulness’, April 1982 “Now, do not get me wrong. I am not here to say that if you pay an honest tithing you will realize your dream of a fine house, a Rolls Royce, and a condominium in Hawaii. The Lord will open the windows of heaven according to our need, and not according to our greed.
If we are paying tithing to get rich, we are doing it for the wrong reason. The basic purpose for tithing is to provide the Church with the means needed to carry on His work. The blessing to the giver is an ancillary return, and that blessing may not be always in the form of financial or material benefit.” — Gordon Hinckley

Hinckley’s statement is a ruse. The Church’s track record for paying tithes should raise concern for anyone giving them money.
From their notorious stockpiling billions and even the destitute must pay, to sermons that tithing is mandatory for salvation is scary indeed.

Share your favorite Bible verses with a Mormon on how tithing works and how accountability is always necessary.
Lastly, please pray!

I’ve long said that tithing was not for the Church. A friend of mine wrote a very good article in that vein.

Tithes should go to where the Lord directs your heart to give them.
However, it stands to reason that if no one gave to their local church they’d obviously wouldn’t be in existence which means there would be no pastors, ministers, evangelists, Christan missionaries, etc., etc….
“Tithe” is a word that does not apply to the Church. It means 10%. And even then for Israel it was more than just money. No, we have no percentage for the church.
