March 23 — Brigham’s 1852 Testimony on Slavery, Curse of Cain… pt. 1. Romans 1:22 “Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools.”
Today and tomorrow, we’re looking at Brigham’s testimony that he gave before the legislature in 1852. Mr. Young talked about the Church’s views on blacks, slavery and the curse of Cain. While he offered his thoughts on other subject matters, we’re limiting our look at just these three things.
Years ago, we started a series on Mormon quotes we named ‘Worst of the Worst’. You can find the list here.
I wrongly thought I had found the worst of them until I happened across Brigham’s testimony. Although we’ve looked at part of this in previous posts, I started dissecting what he said. Needless to say, here we are.
To read his speech in full see Brigham Young Address to Legislature – Feb 5, 1852, and/or Church History Catalog.
With the intro out of the way, here we go. As an FYI, I’ve left the spelling and grammar in the original.

My remarks in the first place will be upon the cause of the introduction of slavery.
Long ago mama Eve our good old mother Eve pertook of the forbiden fruit and this made a slave of her. Adam hated very much to have her taken out of the garden of Eden, and now our old daddy says I beleive I will eat of the fruit and become a slave too.
This was the first introduction of slavery upon this earth; and there has been not a son or daughter of adam from that day to this but what where slaves in the true sense of the word.
Again after adam, and Eve had pertook of the curse, we find they had two sons Cain and Able, but which was the oldest I cannot positively say; but this I know, Cain was given more to evil practices than Abel, but whether he was the oldest or not matters not to me.”

Genesis 4:1-2 “And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived, and bare Cain, and said, I have gotten a man from the LORD. 2 And she again bare his brother Abel. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.”

I’m not all that concerned with someone’s spelling and even grammar to some extent.
However, to call yourself a prophet of God I do expect you to know what the Lord has said in His word. Not knowing the birth order of Cain and Abel is a sign he doesn’t read the Bible and using the phrases ‘mama eve’ and ‘old daddy’ speaks for itself.
Tomorrow we’re looking at Brigham’s reason why they’re prejudice.
Please pray for those who believe that Brigham was just like everyone else at the time regarding the race issue. There were many people who didn’t act this way – the abolitionist groups come to mind.
With Love in Christ –
