Ensign, ‘How Can I Pray as the Savior Taught?’ October 2020 “When Christ visited the Nephites, He prayed with them 11 times.  Through word and example, He taught them how they should pray. Latter-day prophets, seers, and revelators continue to teach what the Savior taught about prayer. … Don’t multiply many words… “Our prayers should be simple, direct, and sincere.”” (more…)

Matthew 6:5 “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.”

The Contributor, Vol. 14, No. 9, p.460 “…I think that as Latter day Saints we cannot be too careful in this regard, to avoid the too frequent repetition of the name of Deity. Not only the name of the Father, but the name of the Son. I think we sin in this regard, not alone in our public speaking, but in our ordinances, in our prayers, and you will notice that it has become almost a universal practice in our ordinances, such as administering to the sick, anointing with oil, confirming, ordaining, setting apart, etc., that we frequently use the name of Deity, and nearly always the name of the Savior is used at least twice, at the beginning of every prayer and at the close. …

When we approach the Lord in prayer, and address Him as all our prayers should be addressed to Him, it is all-sufficient either at the beginning or the close, and only necessary in one place for us to ask these blessings and favors in the name of the Savior. If this becomes painful to us at times when we notice it in ourselves and others, how must it be to our Heavenly Father, who has so carefully instructed us in regard to these things!” – Francis M. Lyman, June 4, 1893 (more…)

Matthew 6:5 “And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.”

From the mid 60’s to mid 70’s the LDS Church began implementing mandates on who could offer prayers at Church and how to do it.

In the beginning stages they publicly announced through their monthly magazine, The Ensign, that only men were to offer the opening and closing prayers at each service.

Moreover, they were to only pray using the pronouns thee, thine, thou, etc., when addressing ‘Deity’.

As time waned on through the beleaguered women’s rights era, new rules were implemented to accommodate societal whims.

We’ve listed a few links showing the evolving process during this time – see links below.

Acts 7:59; “And they stoned Stephen, calling upon God, and saying, Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.”

3 Nephi 19:18, 24prayg; “And behold, they began to pray; and they did pray unto Jesus, calling him their Lord and their God. 24 And it came to pass that when Jesus had thus prayed unto the Father, he came unto his disciples, and behold, they did still continue, without ceasing, to pray unto him; and they did not multiply many words, for it was given unto them what they should pray, and they were filled with desire.”

Throughout the almost two centuries of existence, the Mormon Church has back peddled itself into land of confusion. Their official canon above tells us the Nephites prayed to Jesus, so you’d think it’d be okay for Mormons to do so, right?

praygA few weeks ago I was asked by a Christian what the prayer life of a Mormon was like.  Because their inquiry caught me off guard I gave an answer that was actually incomplete. After I got home and began thinking about it I began thinking of all the dos and don’ts in Mormon prayer etiquette and my heart sank as I began adding up all the rules.

It’s hard to keep track of everything when there’s always a laundry list of requirements so we’ve laid them out and listed them here.

Power of Prayer

By

Axi Grim

Introduction:

My daughter Axi wrote this article a few years ago when she was 16 years old.  She and I were talking about the beauty of the book of Deuteronomy and how it is God’s love letter to His children of how to keep safe in this world.  It’s the do’s and don’ts of life.
