Righteous Inherit the Earth
D&C 45:58; “And the earth shall be given unto them for an inheritance; and they shall multiply and wax strong, and their children shall grow up without sin unto salvation.”
Matthew 5:5; “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”
Why is the earth promised to the righteous Mormons for an inheritance if the goal is to become a god with your own planet?!
According to Mormon theology Jesus is going to be inheriting the earth when all’s said and done. D&C 76:107-108, Jesus the Christ, pg 735.
And why is there a promise to anyone their children will grow up without sin? All men are born with a sin nature we can’t divorce ourselves from while alive. We become new creatures in Christ (2 Cor 5:17) when we believe in the true Jesus of the Bible which the Mormons have rejected, but that sin nature is still in us.
At the beginning of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount we see the blessings we call the Beatitudes. Jesus gave a list of the blessings before He actually gets into the sermon as a way to encourage those listening in and invite them into His Kingdom. This was a sharp reminder to the Jews of a sermon that was delivered some fourteen or so centuries earlier on mount Gerizim and mount Ebal when the list of blessings and cursings were read – Deuteronomy 27:12.
The earlier sermon was a reminder of the laws and effects of disobedience, whereas the latter was to give hope for now and hereafter in the articles of agreement between God and man. They were designed to let us know what is expected of us and in return how God will bless us.
This is the only blessing in the NT that mentions an inheritance with any portion of the earth. It’s in reference to Psalm 37:11 and understood to mean that inheriting Canaan is the inheritance of heaven. The promise to the meek is for the here and now while on earth – peace can be had right this moment in His Kingdom, following Him. The meek of the world has always been given a bum rap – they’ve been deemed less driven for success and sort of the back seat population who won’t stick up for themselves.
Jesus has told them the characteristic of meekness is a desirable trait and worthy of a blessing from God.
The future inheritance for the meek is the heavenly Canaan flowing with milk and honey. Sadly, the Mormons aren’t told about this caveat of the Lord – they’re just given a partial blip of a verse from the Bible that’s out of context and lied about.
